Opportunities to Teach Compassion

Brought my 8 years old son to take a bus to a mall a few stops away from our house.

Two of us were seated.  Son noted an inch worm crawling on my arm and alerted me (might have crawled / dropped onto me while waiting under the tree next to the bus stop).  I swept the worm gentle down to the floor (never to kill).

Son observing it inching itself forward in an interesting manner on the floor.

Son: Mum, what will happen to this creature?

Me: What do you think?

Son: Someone may accidentally step on it and kill it.

Me: Yah, I think so. Even if no one steps on it, it may also die because this bus is not its natural habitat.

Son: So poor thing.

Me: (pause for him to carry on)

Son: Can you give me a piece of paper?

Me: For?

Son: I want to pick it up and drop it on a plant.

Me: (trying to fish paper from my bag. Couldn't find any and gave him a name card of a supplier).

Conversation with my son - On him finding his internal compass on learning

Below is the conversation extract I had with my son last Sunday. It's about his O levels.

Why We Must Stop Fixing Our Children

The BookHere's an abstract from an excellent article from RaisingResilientKids.com :

From a distance, the lake and surrounding forests were an idyllic setting. Along the shore a father was teaching his young son to fish. This appeared to be a wonderful teaching moment. Yet as we approached it became clear that the father was frustrated and the child was unhappy.

"You've got to hold the rod straight and cast straight ahead."
"I'm trying."
"How many times do I have to show you?"
"I want to do it my way!"
"You're going to break it!"
"I don't care!"

Are Our Schools Killing Creativity In Our Children?

My daughter has a P1 English vocab question in picture form that is with me until now.

In the picture, it shows a dog going after a cat.  So the multiple choice words include ‘playing, chasing, etc’.  My daughter chose ‘playing’ and she was marked wrong.  In my eye, the obvious word should be ‘chasing’.

I asked her why she thinks that she is correct.  She pointed to the face of the cat and told me, ‘See, the cat is smiling.’ (and the picture really shows a smiling cat).

Having the knowledge is good though it does not mean you have to tail 100%.Please note that info are mostly from the western countries as Asian countries have minimal to begin with. Early childhood educators are trained in these and at degree and above level, some are required to read through research journals, etc and write papers as assignments.

Apply knowledge based on your discretion.

Healthy TCM Desserts

My family has various types of Chinese desserts/beverage weekly. Unless prepared by myself (that I may add in more ingredients), otherwise my maid will prepare simple ones daily or on alternate days.

As my kids are all in schools during morning and afternoon hours, my maid is relatively free at home and so, she has to prepare any one of the above during weekdays (weekends we will eat those more complicated ones prepared by my mum).

Common Chinese desserts that can be prepared by my maid are:
