Boys Just Wanna Have Fun (Reading)

Does your boy resist reading?  Having difficulty getting them to pick up that book? The solution? Laughter is indeed the best medicine.

Two years ago, when struggling with getting my then-K2 to start reading on a more regular basis, I picked out a "Humor book" from NLB. I still remember vividly, how ds1 complained that there were a lot of pages (about 60 pages) in that book. Pinning on the hope that he may be enticed by the funny story and finish the whole book in one sitting (actually there are only a few lines in each of the 60 pages), I merely told him that he could stop after 3-4 pages and continue the next day if he wished. 20 minutes later, he told me (proudly) that he finished the whole book and the story is quite funny. Bingo! So hence started our journey down the funny lane....

Good english story book to recommend for upper level kid

I found these authors good for upper primary kids:

1) Sophie McKenzie - Blood Ties

It has won numerous awards and the plot is thought-provoking and gripping. It is about cloning and people's reactions to it. It links 2 kids who are actually clones but have no idea that they are clones and they need to figure out who their parents really are and how they can escape the clutches of a terrorist group.

How to Savour Secondary School Literature

The beauty about savouring Very Happy Literature is that it gives one an opportunity to voice out one’s opinion backed by logic/evidence from text. What is further extraordinary about this subject is that it is subjective.

However, it is unfortunate that Literature is not considered a core subject. On the contrary, the savouring of Literature enhances one’s skill/ability in understanding human relations and also allows us to put ourselves in the shoes of the authors and explore in an in-depth manner, their thought mechanism behind the plot from the characters’ point of view. To use 'Diary of Anne Frank' as an example, if you have read it, then you will know what I am talking about.

Teaching Phonics : Mystery Bag Game

  1. Get a plain coloured mystery bag. Preferably black or dark blue/red. Mystery mah.... Why not bags with polka dots or stripes, you may ask? Answer is.... so as not to distract the child's concentration from the task at hand. Mystery bag should ideally be a large cotton drawstring bag, so items of multiple sizes would be able to fit nicely without giving hints of content (in the bag)?
  2. If you are teaching letter a, put in apple, apricot, aeroplane into it.
  3. As child dips hand into the bag, ask child to guess what the item is by the feel of the item shape.
