Now known as Odyssey

Also known as Learning Vision @ Central (Arthur Road)

Located at Arthur Road, this is Learning Vision’s first premium centre aimed at developing children into global citizens by exposing them to diverse cultures and practices. The centre, which opened in January 2001, takes advantage of its proximity to nature to educate and develop in children an appreciation for the earth and environment. Children can look forward to creative programmes such as drama, ballet and violin lessons, which will give them opportunities to enjoy the visual and performing arts.

Learning Vision @ Arthur Road as the Centre of the Arts for Young Children aims to promote creativity and appreciation of visual and creative arts whereby children will be enthralled by their creations, such as Terracotta Pot & Rock Painting, Sand & Frame Art and T-shirt Painting, and many more hands-on activities.

Philosophy:

Learning is a joyful journey that begins from young and continues throughout our lives culminating in a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and wisdom.

It is with this desire to nurture the young that brings about a learning community in which Learning Vision was born.

Facilities:

Parent’s Resource Centre
In every Learning Vision centre, we have a Parent’s Resource Centre which is filled with a wide range of resources such as books and articles on parenting. Here, you will also find documents of children’s learning experiences and their works. It is a warm and welcoming area for both parents and children.

Piazza
The Piazza is a key feature in all Learning Vision centres. It is a common area where children, parents and teachers meet to play and learn together. Children will learn to take turns, share, negotiate and even resolve conflicts here.

    * Block area
    * Puzzle area
    * Dramatic play area

Classroom
Classrooms are usually designed with an open concept, ensuring ample streams of natural lighting and outdoor view which creates a healthier room environment.

Another key feature for all Learning Vision centres are our learning corners. It will promote autonomous and self-directed, hands-on exploratory and discovery learning. Learning Corners can include:

Math Corner - Math Corner promotes a hands-on, exploratory approach to learning math content and acquiring important processing skills like problem-solving, collecting and recording data, interpreting, discussing and communicating ideas, logical thinking and reasoning.

Science Corner - The Science Corner is where the children will embark on the Science curriculum which emphasizes on inquiry, problem-solving, cooperative learning, scientific reasoning and critical thinking, collecting and interpreting data and making hypothesis in an experiential learning environment.

Computer Corner - Computer Corner provides opportunity to develop the children’s competency in technology and enhancing their computer literacy and IT skills.

Reading Corners Always packed with high quality storybooks covering various topics of interest. The objective is to provide leisure reading, enjoyment and information to promote an appreciation in books and reading.

Outdoor Pavilion
We believe learning does not only occur within the classroom. Rich opportunities for learning and exploration are extended to the outdoors. As far as possible, we would allocate an outdoor learning area which could include play equipment, atelier or sand pitch for children to immerse in nature.

Music & Drama Room
All Learning Vision centres are designed with at least one music and drama room which allows for creative music and drama experiences. Children will get to explore all kinds of sounds, movements, percussion and musical instruments. They will learn to listen and create music and hone their creative expression.

The Learning Vision environment is a dynamic one which invites children to explore, discover and learn. It will inspire our children to embrace new and exciting challenges in their journey of lifelong learning.

Learning Vision @ Arthur Road

I have always wonder why  this Arthur Road Learning Vision Center keep the name Kids Central. When kiasu parents such as myself want to find a Learning Vision, this center conveniently did not appear in directories and listings because it is listed under another name.

So I would never have found Learning Vision @ Arthur Road if not for a ex colleague whose son is also in the center. It came highly recommended and we were lucky enough to visit on Learning Vision's Open House! How lucky was that!

On reaching the place, Learning Vision @ Arthur Road reminds me of my old primary school. Situated on a landed property around landed houses, this 2 storey center has a huge grass field with lots of playground equipments. There is a "car park" for kids that are loaded with Tricycles and Little Tikes toy cars - the type where the little kid can go in, ignite the "engine" and pedal around.

My little boy who is about 10 -11 months  warm up to the place much faster than expected and decide to literally climb a rainbow with some encouragement by the teacher there.

The 6 months my baby boy spent there in infant care is great. The infant care have 2 sections - on for younger babies who are not mobile and one for those that are crawling and walking. We bring our own milk, but the babies who start on solid also get cereal and porridge. My boy learned to walk during his first month there and the teachers give him regular baby massages. Over there they really work with the parents closely on how they want the baby to be cared for and the baby's daily activities are kept in a log book so parents are updated on everything.  When my boy started to bite other babies, the teachers work with me closely to correct the behavior.

I was looking forward to my baby moving on to toddler there. They were already helping him make the transition when my office moves to the other end of the island. I was hopping he can then enjoy the big field and equipments on a more regular basis. He had learned how to sayang the pet rabbit there and find his own way to the toddler class.  In addition, I was looking forward to put him in music enrichment which can start when he is 18 months. One parent happily shared with me how his old child get swimming, speech and drama, arts and craft, Chinese classes all in one place and they can spent weekend for play instead of enrichment classes.

We were sorry to have to have to pull him out and put him somewhere else. Well, maybe one day I might get a job in the east again. I won’t hesitate to put him back to this center again.

Just want to add - about LV music enrichment programme

Just want to add that at LV, the music enrichment program -Music For The Intelligent Mind® is a program created in collaboration with Seimpi School of Music.

While most program for the young start at 3 years old, you can start as early as 12 months with this one and they do more than the usual singing and playing from other programs. However, LV centers need a minimum class size of 5-6 to form a class, so not LV centers have enough children to form a class at 18 months.

LV at Arthur road seems to have a high percentage of Kiasu parents though. The parents of my son's infant class have already signed up for the Music Enrichment 2 months before it is due to start.

LV music enrichment programme

How much do they charge?  Actually, I'm skeptical to any sort of music enrichment programmes below the age of 3 because most of them are just "music and movement", read - "I put the music CD in the player, and just let the kids dance around".  So it is easy enough for us as parents to do ourselves everyday without paying through our nose for it, unless we are too lazy ourselves.

Cost of Enrichment Programme

hmmm I don't really remember but I think it is under $100.

I suppose you might be right for very young kids but the programme for age 2 and up claims that they use games and flash cards to train the toddlers in "eye training, speed reading, photographic memory, ear training and exposure to percussion and piano.".  I suppose it might be repetitive if you are sending them for related programmes like Shichida. For the keyboard part, maybe can buy a $10 electronic toy piano and start teaching them yourself.

Cost of Enrichment Programme

Hmmm... sounds like even those teaching music are now moving into brain training!  Guess it's worth a look-see.  Will check it out later.

No more infant care

I was thinking of sending my son there but I called them up and they don't have infant care any more. The fees is really high too. $1300 for full day for toddler to kindergarden.

Kids Central

$1300?!!!  Even with subsidy that would be still above $1K!  And people are complaining about Pat's schoolhouse and Etonhouse being expensive?

Wow... they had better be delivering something good at that price.

mincy, can confirm?

ChiefKiasu | Fri, 22/02/2008 - 2:08pm

thats a drastic fee increase

Wow wow wow...!

Less than one year ago infant care is $1050 and toddler is $650 full day before subsidy. Lower for older kids. I don't know what calls for the big change in fees. But that sure is drastic.

I use to think the center is great value for money but looks like they have priced it in a range that is no longer affordable for most of us.

It's a big change!

I was looking to for a preschool to enrol my toddler near my parent's place and i found that the previous "old school" @ Arthur Road is now looking splendidly impressive!

Fees are okay at $1300 for a full day programme, and the school, facilities and low teaacher to child ratio is great, as compared to the quite run-down PSH centre nearby.

I can't wait for him to start school next month!

Any newbies joining in? :)
