Thanks!janet_lee88 wrote:Hi notabox,
Congrats for obtaining a place in Pei Hwa in yesterday's ballot.
Ds attends the following classes:What enrichment lessons does your son attend? Are those lessons necessary ? The reason being is that children in afternoon sessions do not have time on weekdays. At P1/2, my son did his school homework at night and revision in the morning. Fortunately his Chinese tutor was available on Saturdays.
1. English @ Zoophonics
2. Chinese @ Berries
3. Maths @ MPM
4. Piano @ Childcare
5. Abacus @ ? (still searching)
I have the same thoughts...that ds will not have time to go for additional class before/after school. I am ready to discontinue his English enrichment as I believe the school's syllabus will be adequate. The rest I hope to continue for another year or two since I read here that P1&2 in PHPP is pretty "relaxing"? Aim to stop all enrichment except Piano (that is, if ds wants to pursue further) by end of P2 unless ds is doing badly in school.
Appreciate your further opinion.

The piano and abacus classes may have to be taken out, unless his piano has reached a certain level.
Re: Congrats
Congrats to all parents whose kids just got into PHPPS next year! Welcome!
You are definitely keeping your ds really busy. I think P1/2 can still continue. By P3, most will take up at least 1 CCA and the school workload is heavier. Then really need to reconsider which to continue and which to stop. Mine stopped her ballet by mid P2, she is having piano and berries, with a CCA. These are keeping her busy this year(P3).notabox wrote: Ds attends the following classes:

Re: Congrats
imho, abacus is to build up foundation in math. Once the foundation is there, it is no longer nec. to continue with abacus. If you take a look at the lower pri math worksheets, they're mainly dealing with logic thinking and understanding english sentences. Not so much mental math calculation. The MOE syllabus for math is quite different from abacus. In other words, one can do very well in abacus & yet fail p1 math if the english understanding is not there.notabox wrote:What enrichment lessons does your son attend? Are those lessons necessary ? So for my ds who is also taking abacus currently, I'll drop it once he reaches p1 as he has already achieved the basic foundation. If you agree with me, that will strike one item down your list. The other thing I'll do to save time and effort is that I'll send ds to the same enrichment ctr for both English & Math. It may mean that I compromise on the standard a bit, but I don't wish to spend my whole weekend just rushing for my kid. That's unfair to me. And that's tiring for the kid too
I dropped my dd's abacus class one month into her P1. It was on Fri evenings so was rather tiring for her. I will give her quick 10mins mental tests twice a week now on multiplication tables. She is currently learning piano on Fri mornings and swimming on Sat mornings. Good enough for now.

Classes
I wish I can give my son off on weekends, but how to ? EL spelling/dictation have to learnt on Sat/CL tingxie and moxie on Sundays. He used to have to have swimming every Sunday but didn't want to continue as swimming coach only has slot at 4pm and that is his nap time.
It's impt to build up foundation from P1...bcos subject understanding for Eng & Math are very impt. Maths problems at P3 onwards requires a good understanding of what is required.
