2022 Phase 2A Predictions

As we get ready for the 2022 P1 Phase 2A registration, let us review the changes that will feature in this year’s P1 Registration.

  1. The Phases 2A(1) and 2A(2) has been merged into a single Phase 2A.  Priority afforded to alumni members has been removed and alumni members will be treated at the same priority as people who were from the school but did not join the alumni.
  2. 40 seats will be reserved for Phase 2C.  These seats will be taken from the earlier Phase 2A and 2B.
  3. Phase 2B will continue to have a minimum of 20 places, but only an addition of 1/3 of places left after Phase 1 and 2A will be assigned to Phase 2B.  The other 2/3 will go to Phase 2C.

In other words, a total of 60 places are reserved for every school.  In the worst case, there might not even be a Phase 2A for the school if the take-up rate in Phase 1 for the school is so hot that every seat is taken safe for that 60 seats.  Don’t worry, that is very unlikely to happen as the school usually knows exactly how many people are signing up for Phase 1 long before registration starts, and they will cater for more places in Phase 2A should Phase 1 interest be very high.

The table below summarizes what might happen in Phase 2A.  We simulated Phase 2A from the last 5 years by adding the people who went for the sub-phases Phase 2A(1) and 2A(2) together and divided it by the number of places available for those Phases.  This should tell us which school is in danger of having to ballot in Phase 2A.  Unfortunately we cannot show the distance (<1km, 1-2km, >2km) that the bidding may occur at.

The schools that are in danger of balloting in Phase 2A are highlighted in RED.  Generally speaking, if Phase 2A is highlighted for the last 5 years, it should be safe to say that you should expect the school to require balloting.  Don’t forget this year will be more intense as Phase 2A has lost 20 seats to Phase 2C.  We have earlier stated the reasons for highlighting or not highlighting the schools in articles every week from this January.

We have also updated the number of places in each school that MOE has assigned and added a new column (2022-2021 Places).  This highlights the difference in places that MOE has assigned for the school between 2021 and 2022.

We are pleased to see that none of the schools in danger of balloting for Phase 2A have their places reduced.  So there are no changes to number of places to schools like CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’.  All those with reduced places are schools which are most unlikely to ballot in Phase 2A.  One district, Bukit Batok, has actually increased its places by a total of 140.  However, most districts suffered a reduction.  You just cannot attribute the reason, why you have to ballot in the schools with high demand, to reduced places 🙂
