In the past couple of years, we have seen FOUR major waves of changes impacting Gifted Education, Direct School Admissions and Math Olympiads:
- GEP Revamp: MOE announced a comprehensive overhaul of the Gifted Education Programme starting from the P3 2026 cohort.
- DSA Math Removal: Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH) has removed Math domain from its 2026 DSA talent areas.
- NMOS Updates: Starting in 2024, only P5 students can take part in NMOS, and the Special Round has been discontinued.
- APMOPS Changes: From 2026 onwards, APMOPS will have separate assessments for P5 and P6 students, with a distinct award structure for P5.
So, what do these changes collectively mean for your child’s roadmap to Secondary 1 entry via DSA?
- GEP Transformation - Shifting from "Elite Group" to "Opportunities for All High Achievers"
- DSA Math Removal - Will DSA (Math) be completely removed or significantly curtailed?
- NMOS & APMOPS Updates - Building Structure in P5 & Preparing for DSA in P6

GEP Transformation - Shifting from "Elite Group" to "Opportunities for All High Achievers"

For the past 40 years, MOE selected the top 1% in P3 to join 9 designated GEP primary schools. From 2027, Singapore will discontinue the traditional Gifted Education Programme (GEP) to implement a more inclusive approach, supporting about 10% (approx. 3,800 students) per cohort.
Decentralised vs. Centralised: Students no longer need to transfer to one of nine designated GEP schools at Primary 4. They can stay in their own schools and attend weekly two-hour, after-school advanced modules (English, Math, Science, or Interdisciplinary) at 15 newly designated, geographically spread schools starting in 2027.
Multiple Entry Points from P3 to P6 vs. One Selection Process in P3: The old two-stage P3 GEP screening & selection tests will be replaced in August 2026 by a refreshed, single-stage P3 identification process. Schools will also use additional school-based information, such as teacher observations, portfolios, and project performance, to identify P4 to P6 students for the new Gifted Education Programme.
Emphasising Individual Strengths vs. Broad-Based Rigour: Previously, the GEP required students to demonstrate exceptional ability across all subjects. Now, children are encouraged to develop their particular areas of strength—such as excelling in Math while being average in English—without facing the stress and pressure of being expected to excel in every subject.
How this affects your child: The Ministry of Education is shifting away from labelling students too early. Their goal is to minimise intense GEP preparation ("hothousing") and foster an inclusive atmosphere that helps every child develop their abilities, no matter where their strengths lie.
DSA Math Removal - Will DSA (Math) be completely removed or significantly curtailed?

Removal of DSA (Math): Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH)’s newly released 2026 DSA talent areas showed that DSA via Math Domain is no longer listed. Meanwhile, Methodist Girls’ School (MGS) has also clearly stated on its website that 2026 will be the final year it admits students under the STEM domain (including Math and Science).
Shift in how DSA (Math) applicants are chosen: Over years of experience successfully helping DSA (Math) applicants achieve Confirmed Offers, we have found that admissions outcomes from top IP schools do not appear to simply reward the most decorated math competition winners. There appears to be a concerted effort to spread opportunities beyond the obvious “top-tier Olympiad medallists”, with students without a strong Math Olympiad track record securing coveted spots in top IP schools by virtue of their excellent performance in their DSA Math Selection Tests, Camps and Interviews.
How this affects your child: It is becoming increasingly clear that the academic DSA Math pathway is narrowing, with competition for Direct School Admission (Math Domain) spots becoming much tougher in future, especially so for specialised schools such as NUS High School of Mathematics and Science.
NMOS & APMOPS Updates - Building Structure in P5 & Preparing for DSA in P6

NMOS Changes: P5 Only + Single Round
NMOS, hosted by NUS High, is an important Math Olympiad for students looking to start building their DSA portfolio.
Since 2024, NMOS is now strictly for P5s, as compared to previously where P3 to P5 students could join. This has halved participant numbers from 5,500+ to 3,000+. With the removal of the "Special Round", NMOS has also been streamlined into just a one 90-minute round with 35 questions, making it tougher and broader.
APMOPS Changes: Separate Tracks and Awards for P5 & P6
APMOPS, organized by Hwa Chong Institution, is a key requirement for DSA Math Applications to top IP schools, with ACS (I) requiring all DSA Math applicants to achieve a Platinum award.
P5 and P6 participants will now compete in separate award tracks. P6 students will retain the Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze tiers as previous years. P5 students will have their own dedicated category, where the top 20% will be recognized with an "Honourable Mention," and the rest will receive certificates of participation.
How this will affect your child: P5 Math Competitions (P5 APMOPS & NMOS) are now seen as low-stake checkpoints for aspiring Math Olympians to gain early exposure and build confidence. P6 Math Competitions (P6 APMOPS & RMO) are reserved for P6 students to win Platinums & High Distinctions and showcase their math talents to build a solid DSA portfolio.
Helping Parents Make Sense Of All these Changes

Levelling the Playing Field
Not having the top 1% of each P3 cohort transferring a few elite schools after the GEP selection test, is a huge move towards a more equitable and fair playing field. This will encourage a healthier ecosystem where success is not defined by a GEP exam at P3, and academic resources are not channelled to only the top GEP schools.
Rewarding Late Bloomers
With multiple entry points into the revamped GEP from P4 to P6, and having the major Math Olympiads focused at the P5 to P6 level, MOE is actively discouraging “hot-housing” of students at the lower primary level, and giving “late bloomers” a fair chance at access to High-Ability programmes and Math Competitions from P4 to P6.
Develop a Growth-Oriented Portfolio
Even for students with strong Math Olympiad results, schools now prioritise intellectual curiosity, sharp thinking, and clear communication over just platinum / gold medals alone. Motivate your child to pursue genuine interests or projects and encourage math lovers to focus on the logic and joy of problem-solving rather than just earning certificates. Skills like communication, reasoning, and interdisciplinary thinking are increasingly important for success in DSA (Math) interviews & selection camps.
Dual Focus on Both PSLE and DSA
It is becoming increasingly clear that the academic DSA pathway is narrowing, with top IP schools no longer offering DSA via Math Domain. Competition for entry into top IP schools through DSA Math is likely to become even more intense, because more mathematically inclined students will be competing for a smaller number of places.
Take advantage of DSA, but avoid relying on it completely. Approach PSLE preparation with the same level of commitment. This helps to relieve "all-or-nothing" stress and allows your child to feel confident about succeeding in both areas.
Conclusion

The rapid rise of AI is already changing the learning landscape, but many opportunities remain. These much-needed changes to GEP, DSA and Math Olympiads signal a return to a deeper purpose of education: helping young people develop curiosity, confidence, and intellectual resilience.
The goal isn't just securing a place at elite IP schools—it's about fostering learners who are confident, inquisitive, and balanced.
