7 Holiday Activities To Learn Without Having To Travel Overseas
While quarantine-free travel may be now possible for Singaporeans, albeit to selected overseas destinations, those who choose to spend the year-end school holidays locally will have no lack of activities to keep kids occupied.
In particular, the 3-day KINEX Holiday Camp, which returns for its second edition, will give your child an opportunity to learn a bit about different countries’ cultures. Of course, activities that transcend cultural boundaries are in store too! The best part is you can let your child try them all in one venue, without having to travel abroad.
#1 Dance to The K-Pop Beat
Fascinated by those viral TikTok dance covers of Korean hits like DDU-DU DDU-DU by BLACKPINK or Permission to Dance by BTS? You child can now learn cool K-Pop moves in DCA’s K-Pop dance class as part of the KINEX Holiday Camp. The class focuses on showmanship and execution of movement to ensure that you feel like a star by the end of the class.

#2 From Japanese Manga to Afro-Peruvian Sounds

Covering a broad range of genres, Japanese manga has captivated audiences of all ages worldwide. Whether your kids like kawaii characters, such as those in Kirby or Animal Crossing, or more ethereal ones a la Sailor Moon, they can learn techniques to draw their favourite manga characters in the Hands-on Manga Art class conducted by Fine Momentum.
Then switch over to a music class to get hands-on in the basics of rhythmic Cajon playing. The percussion instrument, which looks like a crate or box, has its roots in Spanish colonies in the Americas. History records that 18-century African slaves in Peru created the cajon to play folk music at a time when actual musical instruments like drums were prohibited.

#3 The Art of Chinese Craftsmanship
China boasts a rich history in oriental crafts and we often purchase them as souvenirs during our travels to the country. This holiday, let your child immerse in Chinese culture – infused with Singapore heritage – through handicraft. First-Step Education, which focuses on Multiple Intelligence-based learning, will nurture your child’s visual intelligence (Picture Smart) through their Chinese Cultural Craft Class. Get to experience a form of Chinese handicraft that uses clay to make pop-up art of various characters or local cuisines.

#4 Learn the English Game of Darts
Did you know that the game of darts originated from England? A World Darts Championship has also been held in the country annually since 1994. Kids can develop their skills at I Darts’ Junior Dart Trials and learn the basics of throwing darts. They can also explore the entertaining kinds of dart games with different strategies to win in this workshop. Though the game is easy to pick up, enthusiasts will soon realise that there’s a lot to learn, apart from improving one’s aim – with even some mental math involved!

#5 Kick Up the Festive Mood with Music
Want to be immersed in the holiday mood? Let there be music; better yet if it’s performed by your child. With the session conducted by Aureus Academy, even music beginners will get to learn how to play a new instrument, such as piano, guitar or violin, in a day and learn a Christmas song or two along the way!

Drum Tutor’ curriculum is conceptualised by award-winning drummer Er Chow Kiat and lessons are solely based on the pace of the student’s learning ability whether is it learning a new song, working on grading examination materials or breaking down a certain groove or rhythmic pattern.

Come wintertime, Christmas markets like those in Prague, Budapest or Strasbourg will be filled with holiday shoppers looking for the best festive gifts. And personalised and handcrafted items are usually popular picks. Rather than buying such gifts, why not let your child learn to make their own? For 7- to 9-year-old kids, they will get to create unique festive designs on a tote bag to bring home after! The 10- to 12-year-olds can try out soap making in unique shapes ranging from animals, florals, to fruits.
