DSA Talent Areas 2025: What IP Schools Look For — and Other FAQs

DSA talent areas 2025, Direct School Admission

For Primary 6 students in Singapore, the Direct School Admission (DSA) applications begin in May. Interested students have a month to find out more about schools, and choose the schools that can best develop their talent.

Not familiar with the DSA? Here’s what you should know:

  • The DSA allows students to gain direct entry to secondary schools based on their talent in sports, CCAs, and specific academic areas.
  • If children are admitted to a secondary school through the DSA (also known as DSA-Sec), they are not allowed to submit school choices during the Secondary 1 posting process, or transfer to another secondary school down the road.
  • DSA offers are made to children based on "talent areas," and the assumption is that these children are keen to develop their talent throughout the secondary school years. Think of it as a commitment that a student makes, in exchange for a place at a desired school.

For more information, please refer to the official DSA FAQs. Below, we answer some common DSA questions from our parent community.

What counts as “talent” in the DSA?

The MOE is currently reviewing the DSA scheme. There have been concerns about the scheme’s accessibility, the transparency of selection processes, and whether schools are considering a student’s potential, and not just whether they have an established talent. However, the review process and any resultant changes will take time.

KiasuParents recently organised a DSA webinar, where we invited two panellists — a National Institute of Education lecturer and a special needs consultant — to share their own DSA experiences with their children. Here’s what they said:

“Talent needs to be verified by other people, not just yourself… Talent has to be recognised by people in the industry, who indeed feel that the child has something above the rest.”

Who are these “other people?” This could be your child’s CCA (co-curricular activity) teacher, enrichment coach, or anyone in your network that has experience in your child’s talent area. When seeking feedback, ask direct questions, like:

  • Does my child show any qualities or skills that can help them succeed at this activity?
  • Compared to other children their age, are they progressing more quickly?
  • If you were selecting students for a competition, would you choose my child, and why?

Our KiasuParents DSA webinar is a must-watch for parents and children considering the DSA in 2025 and beyond. To purchase the recording (accessible till 1 June 2025), please fill in our registration form.

Apart from talent, should we also consider our child’s academic ability when choosing DSA schools?

Yes, even if your child is applying to a school via a talent, you should still take into consideration your child’s academic ability, and choose a school where they can learn at their own pace.

During our KiasuParents DSA webinar, the panellists spoke honestly about the divide that sometimes exists between students who enter a secondary school via the DSA, and those who enter through grades. If students are clearly unable to cope academically, they may face issues in the classroom, such as difficulties keeping up with daily work, and challenges interacting with group mates during project work.

This isn't about students being elitist — it's a dynamic that can happen in any setting, even among adults, when there's a noticeable gap in ability or performance. When some students consistently struggle to keep up, it can affect group dynamics, often unintentionally. The result isn’t always outright exclusion, but subtle forms of disengagement or disconnect that can be painful and isolating for the affected student.

This is why some forward-thinking families choose to look at mainstream schools, rather than Integrated Programme (IP) schools, for the DSA.

Some factors they will consider:

  • Does this neighbourhood school have a good track record for my child’s talent area? How have they fared in recent school-based competitions?
  • Is there an established team and training programme?
  • Does this school have G1, G2, and G3 streams, so that my child can pick an academic stream that they are truly comfortable with?
  • How flexible is the school, if my child’s interest shifts in future?

To shortlist secondary schools based on talent areas, please visit the Ministry of Education’s SchoolFinder website, click on “Direct School Admission (DSA)” in the left menu bar, and choose the DSA talent areas that your child is keen on.

My child is only interested in IP or DSA-only schools. What should we know?

In 2023, there were 14,500 students who applied for the DSA, some of whom made multiple applications. This amounted to almost 40 percent of the year’s cohort.

Of these applicants, about 4,400 were successful in securing places to secondary schools — broadly, this means there’s about a three in 10 chance of DSA success.

For those eying IP schools, the chance is even slimmer. Based on past figures, slightly over 30 percent of successful applicants gain admission to IP schools.

According to the Ministry of Education, IP schools admit 30% to 35% of their intake through the DSA.

IP schools are popular because they offer six-year courses, allowing students to skip the GCE O-Levels in Year 4 and take either the GCE A-levels or the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma in Year 6. The programme was created for academically strong students to give them a broader learning experience, and students may carry out more interesting project work, or spend more time developing skills such as critical thinking and communication.

As with anything that is only offered to better-performing students, there is definitely prestige attached to the IP. But not all students are suited to IP life, and it can take a toll on those who fail to make the grade as the years go along — this is something to consider if your child may not be able to keep up academically.

You should also be aware that there are DSA-only schools, which only accept students through the DSA process. These are:

For 2025, what are the talent areas for IP and DSA-only schools?

For School of the Arts (SOTA) and the Singapore Sports School, please visit their websites to find out what talents they seek.
