The peak season for Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is near.

HFMD is now more common than ever. It first appeared in Singapore in 1997 and there are now more than 22 different kinds of known HFMD strains, with Enterovirus 71 strain being the latest and the more virulent one that saw more than 55,000 cases in Malaysia and 31,000 cases reported in Singapore in Oct 2018.

The highest on record was in 2016 when 42,000 cases in Singapore were reported with more than half of the cases concentrating within the hotter months of August to October itself. Such seasonal pattern is also observed every year.

While the more common HFMD strain Coxsackie virus spreads wider, the Enterovirus 71 strain transmits faster among children aged 2-6 and attacks deeper into the body system with more complications which include brain, breathing and even heart palpitations. The average duration of recovery is 15 days, while fatalities were also reported in 2018.

For most of us, the more concerning issue is not so much about the quality of medical care available. But rather,

1. How it can be even prevented given the fact that young children lack the conscious ability to avoid direct contact with infected persons,
2. The issue of insufficient protective habits,
3. The inevitable situation where our kids are placed amongst hundreds of other kids in child care or school for at least 4 hours a day.
