Multiplication through play – Ladybird Pegging Game

Multiplication tables are now taught in "groups". For example, 2 balls in 2 groups will have 4. Children can draw 2 circles to represent the "group" in this case is 2. Then, draw in the 2 balls in each of the "group" / the 2 circles.

I do similar technique with concrete objects like this one below. This was done with bothP2 and K2 at the same time. As the concept is more of addition than directly multiplication, they were both able to work with it. And importantly, they had FUN!

I provide these lovely ladybird pegs to the girls to use for the activity. They begin with the 2 Timestables. The circles so call represent the home for the ladybirds. In these homes, the
ladybird flies in 2’s / sets or groups of 2. They begin with…

2 ladybirds in one home = 2
2 groups of 2 ladybirds in another home = 4 and so on…

When they’re done with the counting and the pegging, i let them write the tables – 2 x 1 = 2 (and so on…) until the homes have all been filled with the tables of 2.

At the back, i get them to count the total number of ladybirds pegged to each home and write them. When they have finished with all of the answers, we turn all the homes to the back (answers).

We will recite the answers this way 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and so on…

To diversify the interest, i use ladybird pegs of different colours, and also pegs of other kinds. The story for the "homes" changes with the materials we use. And so far, the kids like them. Very Happy

thanks for sharing. That’s cute

Awrite!

Got it liao hah? Awrite man!

This is one of those teaching

stuffs that aren’t pricey but

serves the teaching purpose.

As SAHM, I am always on the

mission on scouting for value

for money products… and at

times also better if the teaching

aids require no $$$ involved at

all. Hehee.. as in DIY stuffs!!

The only thing invested in DIY

learning aids are time, definitely

some considerable effort & also

scrap stuff from home…. Last but

not least, it’s invested with lotsa love.

Prefers mother to teach

Ha, reminds me of the time when I ask my kid if he wants to join his friend in XX for Chinese Enrichment and he just answered matter-of-factly, no I prefer you to teach. Me MELTS too … but come to think of it now, need to "train" him to set higher standards lol

Thanks!

Thanks, radiantmum.

My girls are very motivated by hands on activities that i prepare for them

to work our daily routine. We have 3 to 4hrs together to spend after sch,

hence i so call entice them with fun activities prior to the seat work which

definitely cannot be avoided…   and truth be told i am guilty of finding

excuses too… especially when i am feeling utterly worn out and shoo

them off to work the materials on their own.

The activities help make home reinforcements less boring and with

the happy smiles i get from them at the end of it all and a morale

booster when they tell me they like learning with me… sigh… i go all

jelly and buttery…. melting heart liao. Hence, the time, effort and $$$

invested into these little stuff are worth it.

Impressed and guilty

Salute buds! I envy parents whom never seem to run out energy and enthusiasm and have full of creative ideas in teaching their kids. I am always finding excuses for myself and takng the easy way out  – guilty guily. The other day (or perhaps month?…) my kid was asking about fractions and I said ok, will teach and show you on paper (yes, that’s the best i Can do ;-p) and that was like eh…ages ago…I think he knows now … oh boy u know what i am driving at SIGH

Beautiful Ladybird Pegs

Heyya sunset_dae, i bought the beautiful ladybird pegs at Daiso.

At SGD $2.00 a box, how to resist right?

That’s when i was thinking……. what fun

stuff could be done with my girls using

those tiny ladybirds… and voila!

I bought a few more boxes in different

colours to diversify their interest in the

grouping aspect of learning multiplication.

Not to mention too, that it was great for

working the finger muscles for better

pincer grip!

Here’s how the box looks like in case you

are trying to search Daiso outlets for them.

I got a few from IMM and another few boxes

from Vivo City.
