Primary School Open House 2025

Primary School Open House 2025 Singapore

Many primary schools in Singapore will be holding open house events from May to July, while some will hold events in the later part of the year.

If you haven’t shortlisted any schools for your child, or are weighing a few options, these events offer a chance to explore the school environment, meet teachers and students, and understand what sets each school apart — whether it’s their values, teaching style, or co-curricular offerings.

One update to be aware of is the ongoing revamp of the Gifted Education Programme (GEP). Going forward, all schools will offer their own programmes to support high-ability learners. Even so, some parents may still favour the nine schools with a long-standing history of running the GEP:

  • Anglo-Chinese School (Primary)
  • Catholic High School (Primary)
  • Henry Park Primary School
  • Nan Hua Primary School
  • Nanyang Primary School
  • Raffles Girls’ Primary School
  • Rosyth School
  • St. Hilda’s Primary School
  • Tao Nan School

While these schools may be familiar names, it’s important to look beyond academic reputation. In the long run, a nurturing environment and strong teacher-student relationships tend to have a greater impact on a child’s development than academic rigour alone. These are the factors that shape how a child feels about school, be it their confidence, motivation, or sense of belonging.

If your child has specific needs or interests and you have many questions, consider requesting a private meeting with the school. During open house talks, schools often request that questions remain general, so that the session stays relevant for all attendees.

When in open house settings, it’s best to ask clarifying questions that build on what’s already been shared. For example:

  • You mentioned inquiry-based learning. What does that look like in a Primary 1 classroom?
  • You said teachers will do regular check-ins with parents. What will they usually cover? Is it more about learning progress, classroom behaviour, or how the child is settling in?
  • You spoke about student leadership. Are there opportunities at all levels, and how do you support the quieter or more introverted students?

When you attend a school tour, it’s also worth observing the environment

Look at classroom displays, posters, and hallway messages, as these show you what the school truly values. Do you see student projects on topics like kindness, inclusion, or sustainability? Or is there more emphasis on trophies, academic rankings, and achievements?

Pay attention to how student work is displayed. Are a variety of abilities represented, or is it just the “top” pieces that are featured? Such cues can help you decide whether the school’s culture aligns with your values.

Some open houses also include a CCA fair, often run by students. Although the students are young, asking them a few simple questions can be revealing:

  • Why did you choose this CCA?
  • What do you enjoy about it?
  • Is it hard sometimes?
  • How much time do you spend on it each week?
  • Do you have good friends in your CCA?
  • Do you have time for homework and rest?
  • What’s your favourite part of school?
  • What would you change about school, if you could?

Speaking with students, teachers, and other parents helps you get a clearer picture of what life at the school is really like, and it will make the open house experience more engaging for your child.
