PART A : Understanding the DSA Math process. What it is and how it works?
 

The Direct School Admission (DSA) Math scheme allows Primary 6 students who have exceptional mathematical abilities and achievements, to apply for early admission to their desired secondary schools before the PSLE. 

Students are selected through a rigorous screening process to assess their talents and accomplishments. In general, schools are looking out for students who have:

• Consistent and excellent academic results, especially in mathematics
• Strong interest and drive to excel in mathematical study, research, competition or enrichment
• Outstanding achievement or portfolio, such as Math Olympiad or Math Elective Programmes

In recent years, while the number of DSA applicants has steadily increased, the number of DSA spots at top IP schools has remained relatively constant, with the selection criteria increasingly focused on non-academic talents. This has resulted in much confusion and worry amongst parents of Primary 6 students. 

Parents, students and even DSA enrichment centres have the misconception that DSA Math has the highest chance for success amongst all the DSA academic domains! This is because most of the top IP schools offer the largest number of spots for DSA Math as compared to the other academic domains.

Unfortunately, as many students and parents have discovered, the competition for DSA Math spots has become tougher in recent years! Students who previously would have secured Confirmed Offers with their math competition awards are now being placed on Waiting Lists. Consequently, students must excel even further in Math Olympiad competitions to distinguish themselves and enhance their prospects of receiving a Confirmed Offer.

PART B : 2025 DSA Math Timeline
 

(STEP 1) January to May - Review Secondary School Choices

Visit the schools' websites for more information. DSA information are generally updated by late April.

(STEP 2) May to June - Apply via MOE DSA-Sec portal

After shortlisting the schools that you and your child would like to apply for, submit your child’s application through the MOE DSA-Sec Portal before the June deadline.

(STEP 3) July to September - Invitation for shortlisted DSA (Math) students to attend Interviews, DSA Camps or Selection Tests

Each school has its own DSA Math selection criteria and schedule. Most require shortlisted candidates to take a written test and attend an interview. Some like NUS High and RGS also require the candidates to attend DSA Selection Camp and Collaborative Hands-on Activities respectively. Offers will be sent out by early September.

(STEP 4) Late October - School Preference Submission

After receiving offers, you and your child will need to select up to three schools (in order of preference) through the MOE DSA-Sec Portal. You and your child need to clearly understand the commitment involved if you accept a DSA Math offer.

(STEP 5) November – DSA (Math) Allocation Results

DSA Math School allocation results will be released in November, together with the PSLE results.

PART C : Preparing for DSA Math Selection. How to give your child an edge in securing a place through DSA Math
 

As part of the DSA Math selection, students will need to demonstrate outstanding aptitude in mathematics and excellent academic performance, to gain an edge in their DSA Math application. 

Students are strongly encouraged to build up a portfolio, by winning top awards in prestigious Math Olympiads such as NMOS, RMO and SMOPS. A portfolio showcasing multiple top math competition awards will help students demonstrate their mathematical proficiency and significantly boost their chances of securing a DSA Math confirmed offer.

Preparing for the Math Olympiad competitions not only sharpens students' problem-solving abilities but also directly increases their likelihood of excelling in the school’s DSA Selection Test or DSA Selection Camp. This is because they often test similar advanced math knowledge and problem-solving tasks that are also found in the Math Olympiads.

As part of the selection process, DSA Math applicants will also have to go through interviews that are designed to further assess the student's reasoning abilities and their capacity to eloquently explain complicated mathematical concepts and solutions to others. This is more challenging to prepare for, as the interviews aim to explore the applicant’s mathematical thinking and problem-solving strategies in greater depth.
