Re: All About Teaching Values

Some parents fail to discipline their children and think it is the teacher's job to educate and discipline. We forget that teachers have to cope with 40 students in their classes. We only have one, two or maybe three. The best thing we parents can do is to discipline our children and teach them basi...

Re: Places to go as a family

There is no lack of places to go in Singapore. But we often fail to plan, and because of that, we miss opportunities. The March holidays is coming soon. We'll try to pick up some ideas suggested by our members in the recent article.

Re: March 2019: What's Your Idea of Career Guidance?

Children, being young, lack the breadth of experience we parents have. I can see that my children have different aptitudes and personalities. I avoid the temptation of telling then you should be a lawyer, or an artist or architect. What I do instead is encourage them to take an interest in different...

Re: Abolishing Streaming in Secondary Schools: Netizens React

The good thing about SBB is that it prepares children for their career by honing their relevant skills over six to ten years of schooling. It used to be one-size-fits-all where children were stuck with a bunch of subjects they had no aptitude for, or may not even like. And they came out of school an...

Re: Where's your next holiday travel destination?

The children like to spend time at the beach. I prefer to take in the lifestyle and the culture of the place -- the nightlife, dances, sports like muai thai and so on. My husband is the easiest to please; just put a beer mug on the table and he can sit in a coffeeshop for hours. So far, we've always...

Re: How to motivate your child to read independently?

If a child is generally weak in the language, it is not enough just to get him or her to read more books. You need to read aloud to him/her because by listening to the story read with the proper enunciation and inflection, they will understand and appreciate the language better.

Re: 10 Habits of happy couples

Someone once said that a good marriage is not one between two half circles but two full circles. The two circles should have sufficient overlap which represents common ground – common interests, activities, friends and so on. But there should be sufficient space for the individual to be free to indu...

Re: The nature of forgiveness

If we are cheated of our life-savings or if someone did something to seriously injure our relationship with someone we care about, those are things we don’t forgive overnight. But as I get older, I realise that many things are not earth-shattering or life-threatening. Usually, it is the ego that is ...

Re: Club 3 or more Kids

Yes, this is serious. If we don't replace ourselves, in two or three generations, our population demographics are going to change drastically. To keep the economy going we'll need to bring in foreigners, which means our language, food and culture will undergo change. Having more kids mean more work ...

Teaching Children to Think and Reason

I think teaching children how to think and reason is one of the biggest gifts a parent can give to his or her child. We should teach children not only how to work things out logically but also to be able to deduce and make fair judgments when there are no facts to work with. I agree that children ar...
