Postby tankee » Wed Feb 23, 2011 8:51 am

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand - New Zealand declared a national state of emergency Wednesday after one of its worst earthquake disasters left nearly 400 people dead or missing.

Rescuers worked frantically to reach survivors under collapsed buildings in the stricken city centre of Christchurch, after recovering 75 bodies. About 300 people are still missing after Tuesday's 6.3-magnitude quake.

"New Zealanders have woken to a tragedy unfolding in the great city of Christchurch," said Prime Minister John Key, declaring the national emergency.....

I have fond memories of my last visit to NZ and Christchurch.

This quake is more deadly than the last Sept 4 7.0 tremer as it was nearer to Christchurch's centre and much closer to the earth's surface.

:(

Christchurch is a lovely place. My parents and I enjoyed ourselves tremendously when we went there in 2005 autumn. Sad to see the church next to the hotel we stayed so badly demaged. We had taken many photos of that church.

one day before the quake, more than a 100 whales beached and died

they probably knew what was to come, just like the frogs in Sichuan before their huge quake

It is so sad and unfortunate that the earthquake happened in Christchurch. NZ is a beautiful place and it holds beautiful memories for us too. I have relatives staying in NZ but thank goodness, all of them are staying in different parts of North Island.

Verykiasu2010, you mean the whales beached and died? So they could sense something looming huh? Maybe people should have gotten the signal and evacuated themselves...

107 whales beached themselves on an island on the southern most tip of NZ.

Just heard on the radio while driving that quite a number had to have their limbs amputated in order for them to be rescued successfully :(
