How is heuristics apply to life?

Postby nani » Sat Aug 06, 2011 2:53 pm

Can someone enlighten me please?

Looking at the Math questions that the children are going thru, I really wonder
what/how isn't applicable to life? What's the objective?

We use heuristics in almost everything we do, because it is "good" enough.

The purpose of the schools teaching math heuristics such as "guess-and-check" and "models" is for children to understand the actual process of problem solving before they learn the formal (aka. faster but procedural) methods.

This is supposedly to overcome the old problems of people like us having learnt only the formal methods and knowing how to apply them without understanding the theory behind these formal methods. In the old paradigms, we only learn why the methods work after many, many years. Or sometimes, not at all.

This is also why many of parents like us keep complaining that we cannot teach our children math even when we are engineering graduates!
