New Seat Belt Rules : Height Not Age

Postby tankee » Sat Dec 24, 2011 9:37 am

SINGAPORE - Come the new year, height, and not age, will determine whether your child has to be in child restraints or use booster seat cushions or adjustable seat belts while travelling in a car, the Police announced yesterday.

The change, which kicks in on Jan 1 but will only be enforced from February, affects anyone below 1.35m tall - even adults. Current rules, which came into force in 1992, stipulate that anyone above the age of eight can use normal seat belts.

Drivers who fail to ensure their passengers adhere to the new rule face a composition fine of S$120 and will be docked three demerit points.

The change, said the Police, was made after consultations with the Health Ministry and a review of European Union standards and practices, which found that seat belts only fit properly for those taller than 1.35m.

Countries like the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland and Belgium already practise this, the Police said.

According to statistics from the Health Promotion Board (HPB), in Singapore, only boys who are above the 90th percentile will be 1.35m tall when they are aged eight. For girls, they would have to be close to the 97th percentile.

Using the 50th percentile as a measure, the new rule means that half of Singapore children will need to be in child restraints or use booster seat cushions until they are nearly 10 years old, according to the same HPB statistics.............

DS unhappy when he read the news this morning. He is 1.3m now.

I'm unhappy, so little time to hunt for a booster seat which likely to be out-of-stock with the sudden surge in demand.

thanks for the update.
i would not be aware of this new rule if i didn't visit kiasuparens.

tat mean, parents will have to monitor kids' height more frequently huh...

btw, 1.35m is for barefoot height or not? if the height is closer to 1.35m, some shoes with very thick shoe soles will help or not.... :rotflmao:

Height makes more sense because a the seat belt has to fit properly for it to work as it should in an accident. If the child is small for his age, the seat belt will not be able to secure him and seat belt related injuries could occur. This is also why we need to choose and fit the booster seat properly. Some booster seats do not position the seat belt properly over the child's body, giving a false sense of security.
