Sports for all students with new physical education syllabus

"...1 extra hour of PE a week, starting in 2014...
All Singaporean youth will be able to play at least three sports at a recreational level by the time they leave secondary school.
That is one of the main objectives that the Ministry of Education (MOE) has set as part of its role in Vision 2030 - a project jointly led by the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) and the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS)..."

The title very glam... But it's only 1 hour extra of PE...
And kinda long overdue by MOE?
But hope they are not trying to do MORE with the limited resources and time that the teachers and students are already lacking now...
:?

When I read the article the first thing I thought of was:
1) Does this mean an extra hour of time spent in school?
2) Will the extra one hour of PE translate to extra revision time when PSLE looms near and core subject teachers need the extra time to drill the students. In other words, will PE time be sacrificed again?

It's as if PE is the only way to teach values. If the exams were less difficult, then kids would have time to be kids, interact with parents, peers, teachers in a non-stress environment. They can learn to share and care there too... and better, rather than have to perform at another subject.

My 1st thought is another 1hr for the teachers to not teach PE.

"Students who take part in these clubs outside of school may be able to score LEAPS points, or what was formerly known as CCA points.

These points help students get into post-secondary institutions."

There are only 24 hours in a day and you can probably stay active for about 8 hours.
1 hour more for PE and if the child wishes to take part in these so-called "Super Sports Clubs", how much time is really left to hit the books?

In RVHS, there is an increase of 2 hrs of PE a week this year. In the past was 1 hr a week.

Just one hour more may not be effective. But it is a 66% increase .

Ideally, when the primary schools go single session, the schools should start at 8 am , end at 5 pm with 2 recess and a lunch break, giving plenty of free play time to kids. Kids learn and develop EQ - during these free times. Yes not all will be leaders, but each will find his footing as in the real world.

And schools should have 1 hr PE atleast 3 days a week. All PE classes dont have to be structured. And all the school enrichment, CCA, supplementary classes can be conducted during this time. We will have happier, healthier kids. With No time for many external enrichment, kids need not be so stressed.

Ok, i am dreaming

when my son was in primary school, everytime the exam nears, all PE lessons will be suspended and replaced by doing revision work. He was very disappointed because PE means time to play and sweat instead of just mugging.

I welcome the increase in PE lesson time! However, like what some of you have mentioned, I hope it doesn't mean having to spend one extra hour in school each week! Yet, if time isn't taken away from other subjects for PE, it means teachers will have to teach/cramp the syllabus into the reduced teaching hours. So what is going to be compromised?

Sports aids in development of character, one of which is building drive.
