Do American Born Chinese understand Chinese language?

Postby Ichigokun » Wed Jun 06, 2012 9:04 pm

Just curious. Do American Born Chinese people understand Chinese language? Cos Everytime I wanna say sth in private when I go overseas I usually just say it in Chinese to my parents so nobody in the local society would understand.

Dont wanna find myself in an awkward position if suddenly someone nearby understands what you were talking about :x

Yes, some of them do. Their families are sometimes more enthusiastic about their kids learning Chinese and culture than here in Singapore. There are also some caucasians learning Chinese too. So be careful of your language. :D

Referring to someone as American (or for that matter Australian etc) Born Chinese is essentially reference to the fact that they are of the Chinese race but born in America (or for that matter Australia etc). Hence whether a Chinese born and raised overseas can speak and understand Mandarin or Chinese dialects etc, would depend on whether they have been exposed either in their home environment / socially / learnt the language / dialects.

Actually these days, regardless of where anyone is born or raised, it's no barrier to them being able to speak or understand any language / dialect:-)

:x seems like I was wrong all this while. I always thought ABCs didn't understand Chinese... :xxxx Oops!!

The other time my mom went overseas to buy some clothes and then my mom was wearing a dress than the shop owner was an ABC old woman. Then she kept staring at me when my mom ask me if it looked nice then I felt a bit awkward so I was like..

(in Chinese) not nice.

-thinking the old woman didn't know what I said-

XD omg!

If they know Chinese then maybe when i wanna speak something private I'll mix in a bit of dialect so the ABCs won't know what I'm saying (most of them are Cantonese I think...)

Tell my mom

Bo Ho kua instead of Bu Hao Kan (laugh) XD
