Are people with the same surname related to each other?

Postby Ichigokun » Tue Jun 12, 2012 10:19 pm

Just curious, do people with the same surname have (at least a bit) blood relations?

I heard that two people with the same surname cannot marry one another because it's a taboo since they are somehow distantly, but still related to each other.

Just curious :x

I mean, this thread is about Chinese surnames only because the surname is passed from the father to his offspring and so on, so surely there is at least a bit of relation since at the very start when the surname emerged it branched out from the same single person...

Asking y'all for opinions because I'm only a kid :) Not much life experience and knowledge anyway.

All Chinese surnames can be traced to the same root. However, we must also be aware that during the course of Chinese history, many non-Han minority races in China at some point in history, does adopt a Han Chinese surname. There is saying that Li Bai, the famous Tang dynasty poet might not even be a Han to start with.

That said, in current context, even if two Tans are going to be married, I think it is perfectly fine. Even if they are from the same ancestor, genetically they would be very much different from each other now to have any adverse effect on the off-spring.

Btw, are you using your parent's account to post here? :)

Agree with AC_Power.

Guess it also depends on how common/unique the surname is and where the forefathers came from. China? Taiwan? Which province? Same dialect group?

There are many married couples with same surnames especially if they are common ones like Tan and Lim. With numerous generations before us, there's no guarantee there's no distant relations between chinese spouses even if the surnames are different.

What about a spouse who shares the same surname as your mum?

In that case, all cannot marry cos we are all related. Cos we either descended from Adam and Eve or from a single cell organism.

Drama always have 表哥 & 表妹 fall in love, so far no violent objection between both families. So I guess it's alright. :lol:

@genmai
For example, what if both the people have the same dialect group, same surname and ancestors in the same province.

Actually for Taiwan people they can trace their ancestral roots back to China so they are technically "Chinese".

@AC_Power

I heard Li Bai's hometown was in modern-day Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan used to belong to China Tang I think.
