My nephew has been living abroad since 9 years old and he renounced his citizenship just before turning 21. He's lucky as he was spared the NS.

I think if a boy renounces before a certain age (12 or 13 years old), then no need to serve NS. After that certain age then he is liable for NS, even if he wants to renounce.

He didn't have to. He was Singapore citizen and PR of another country, but because my Sis in law didnt want him to serve NS, they have decided to give up Singapore citizenship.

He recently came back to Singapore on a holiday using his non-SGP passport. He wasn't detained or stopped at the airport.

If I have a son, I would want him to serve NS to toughen him up.

I have a son. I want him to go thru' NS. Tho I know I'll probably feel heartache & worry when the time really come for him to serve NS, I will be proud of him. Similarly, I felt proud of my then-BF-now-DH for completing his NS & reservist loyally & committedly.
