I would like to share some youtube uploads of the Finnisg education system. I must say I am very impressed by how they can really turn around and change their education system and make their education work for them.
I am very impressed by the following aspect of the education system
1) Emphasise on Equity. All schools in Finland are good and there is no bad school since they cannot measure as there are no rankings, gradings and no test at all . Hence, parents cannot choose school basing on academic results but only base on the programmes offered such as music, arts, sports etc.
2) Emphasise on Community and not competition. The whole education community work together to bring out the best of every child. There is no competion amongst school to outshine each other as no one knows which school is better. All are in for the betterment of the children development.
3) Emphasis on Teachers. All primary school teachers are Master Graduates. They put a lot of importance to the education of their future generations and the graduate teaching course is the most demanding and prestigiuos. Great respect are accorded to the teachers and teachers are free to teach as they deem suitable for the child.
4) Emphasis on Holistic edication and not academic. They really mean it when they say they emphasis on the holistic development of the child. they are not interested nor keen on the academic performance of the child.
I enjoy the talk by Mr Pasi Sahlberg very much ==> you should see through the whole 1 hr talk to appreciate what he was talking about. I was very moved by the way they view education.
There is a good read on the Atlantic Mail on "What Americans keep ignoring about the Finland's school success ". you can google and read as the link always hang so i better delete it.
and also other you tube videos on the Finland education.

What do you parents think ? Can we model some aspect / tweak our system ? I doubt we can throw in and change to be like the Finns although i really really like it. Perhaps our MOE can also look into adapting some of the best practises and change our education system as i think it is really too academic base.
What are your opinions ?
