Mr Loo Sheng Nam's alleged attacker is 18-year-old teenager Sumanthiran Selvarajoo. He was charged on Sunday for murder.
Selvarajoo is said to be an outstanding sportsman, who had the "potential to become a national runner", according to his former coach at St Joseph's Institution (SJI), Mr G. Elangovan.
He added that Selvarajoo had never skipped a training session for the two years he had spent with him.
After graduating from SJI,, Selvarojoo went on to study engineering at Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP). Mr Ronnie Cai, a coaching assistant of the track team at the polytechnic attested that Selvarajoo was a "quiet boy", and had an innate ability to excel in the sport, even if he did not train as much as others.
The teen also bagged several medals in cross-country running and steeplechase.
Selvarajoo was training to get into the national track team for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) held here last year, but did not manage to make the cut.
But the teen had a history of violence. He was charged earlier for slashing his friend with a bread knife, and was expelled from NYP after. He was out on bail when he allegedly attacked Mr Loo.
If convicted, he could face the death penalty.
