I read all his early books in the '80s and early '90s, and was deeply engrossed in the detail of his writing. Red Storm Rising, and the Hunt for Red October, for instance, I thought were excellent. His subsequent Jack Ryan series of clandestine/espionage based novels like Patriot Games, the Cardinal of the Kremlin, Clear and Present Danger, Without Remorse, were fun to read, but began to get a little too formulaic for me. I've not read any of his fiction novels after the mid-90s, but did take to a couple of his non-fiction works (Into the Storm, Every Man a Tiger), where his attention to detail and lively narration of battle really shone through.

RIP Tom Clancy, your books made a big impact on me during the early formative years of my reading journey.
