If tuition fees are expected to increase, won't this penalize the less well-off families?

Doubt they will quit, cos they will lose quite a fair bit of benefits. Pte tuition centres can't give them equitable terms, unless we're talking abt bigger players like TLL.
What kind of benefits are we talking about here? Cpf? Do people really prize cpf so much these days?

Will the MOE-tcrs that return 100% to their jobs be able to give 100% attention to all the students, if the admin/CCA etc commitments don't drop? WIll MOE supplement them in terms of allowance if they can conduct extra remedial classes for school students? When you take away this extra 'moonlighting' income opportunity from them, averaging $120 per hr or so, will the tcrs be happier?
:yikes: $120 per hour! I didn't know it's so high! This works out to be $2,880 per month ( 6 hours x 4 weeks x $120) which is very good extra income. Of course the teachers won't be happy if they are not allowed to "moonlight" anymore.

I dunno if I heard wrongly from the Ch8 news at 10pm. But the operator quote $100-120, then my DH and I were like "wow! $600 per week X 4" Good money sia...

I can't access xinmsn now, maybe someone can watch and update us? Cheers!

Maybe possible for group tuition...each student charged $30 - $40 per hour and you can tutor 3-4 at the same time.

I am with a stat board now, and plenty of lucrative moonlighting opportunities in the private sector, but we are totally not allowed.
Why are teachers allowed in the 1st place? What will happen if the same student attends the teacher's tuition class?

sorry maybe shouldn't use "moonlighting" which sounds illegal. But it's allowed in their contract on condition they declare annually bah? maybe MOE tcrs reading this can clarify?
it is moonlighting..

regardless or whether it is legal or not.

In Singapore, teachers are now required to seek approval to give tuition outside of school, following a review of guidelines by the Public Service Division

In a sign that the ministry is paying closer attention to the issue, teachers have been barred from giving private tuition without approval. Previously, they could give up to six hours of private tuition a week.

The MOE spokesperson told TODAY that with effect from Jan 1, teachers are required to seek approval for paid part-time lecturing or teaching, which includes paid tuition.

This came about as the guideline on participating in part-time lecturing or teaching, including paid tuition, not exceeding six hours a week has been removed following a review by the Public Service Division.

“The Public Service has existing guidelines on public officers participating in outside activities to ensure that their outside activities do not distract them from their core duties,” she added.

$120 per hour is for one-to-one tuition at JC level, I believe. My friend, who is a swimming coach, charges $150 for a 45- minute lesson. For tuition, the teacher has to prepare the lesson before hand and mark the student's work after lesson (especially for humanities subjects at JC level), so the time taken is more than the two hours the teacher charges for each lesson. Swimming lessons, on the other hand, are different. There isn't anything to prepare pre-lesson, or anything to mark post-lesson.

Wow tuition is so expensive now? I hope MOE won't clamp down tuition like what china is doing now as this affects the livelihoods of many full time tutors.

One thing I like about tutoring is I get to accompany and guide the students in their learning journey over the years - which I think is especially beneficial for languages. In school, it's usually 2 years at most (i.e. follow up with the class from previous year)

What I miss about teaching in school are the (more) opportunities of being involved in the personality development of students.
