Tuition Lessons Duration: 2 hours or 1.5 hours?

Postby eekjan » Tue Dec 10, 2013 12:57 pm

Hi Parents,

Just a poll check on the general consensus in the private tuition market; in a small class-size setting (8 to 12 students), would you rather send your child for:

1.5 hours lesson duration

- Lower fees per month
- But MAY be able to take up more subjects per month due to lower cost per subject

2 hours lesson duration

- Higher fees per month (as tutors need to cover their costs for taking less classes)
- travelling trip may be more worth it as time spent in the tuition centre is longer per week

Do share your opinion! :snuggles:

It depends more on the child than anything else... If the child is quite young (e.g. 4 or 5 years old) then 2 hours will probably be very difficult for them, and due to struggling to pay attention, they will probably only get about 1.5 hours of work/learning done anyway, so 2 hours is a waste of time and money. Actually, I think for the very young students (e.g. age 3), even 1.5 hours can be too long. But if they are older and have a good attention span, then 2 hours is worthwhile.

Of course, every child is different, so age alone cannot determine the best time. But in general, younger children would be better suited for shorter lessons, and older children are better suited for longer lessons.

Personally, I think 1.5h suffices.

However, it all depends on the child(attention span), circumstances (tests, exams), etc.

2hours should be for more intensive teaching or revision.

From my personal experience as a full time tutor, this fully depends on the number of subjects, type of subject and age/ability of the child. For example, a 10 year old child with one subject would probably only need 1.5 hours as young kids have shorter attention span. If there is are more than one subject being taken, a 2 hour lesson(with a short break in between) is advisable.

I think for younger kids - P2 and below - 1.5 hours should be sufficient. It usually takes the kids about 15-20 mins to warm up to a tutor they see only once a week and it takes that long for both to "catch-up" on what happened in school and what they did the previous lesson. Also recommended is a short toilet break in the middle.

For older kids, 2 hours is good. For some kids, short break is needed while others, no need. Some tutors use the short break to chat and get the child to respond more (e.g. practice speaking in Chinese). 1.5 hours is too short for older kids.

I think for a starter, 1.5hr for twice per week or 2hr for once per week should be good enough.

it depends on the child's attention span.
usually the first 45 min is most effective, after which their minds start to wander...for 1-1 tuition. but for group tuition, 2 hours is ok.

for P1 / P2 : 1.5 hrs ok

for P3 to P6 : 2 hrs better, cover more content, esp. Science (not easy subject to tackle. Open ended part is tricky, not straight forward, need to spend more time on this Section )
