Postby pinky » Tue Mar 04, 2014 2:09 pm

Read from ST today that 2 men were spotted pumping used cooking oil out of a drain in Toa Payoh but fled before the police came.
This was the 3rd case and has been referred to NEA which is still investigating. This happened in broad daylight and in an earlier case, a couple
was also doing it in Jurong area, their photograph appeared in the Chinese papers a few days ago.
:scared: :scared:

Kinda funny all these are spotted by public and not the authorities.

Maybe undercovered operations we are not awarded of  .

But those restaurants, hawkers, cafés who bought and used them are really 没良心。 :nunchuk:

They said extract oil from sewers.
I wonder why sewers have oil.

The oil is sold to Malaysia to be used as biodiesel - as claimed.
If that's the case why did the men fled when the police came?

Restaurants use a lot of oil for cooking, especially deep frying. The oil cannot be disposed of by just pouring down the sewers, otherwise guaranteed to clog up all the sewer pipes. The waste oil have to be poured into a waste oil trap. The trap is essentially a storage tank for oil. The outlet looks like a hole in the ground, so people can mistake it for sewers.

The oil in the trap are then periodically pumped out and disposed of. One way of recycling the waste oil is to process it and turn it into bio-diesel.

Those jokers that were extracting the waste oil from the trap - why they run away? Probably because they were stealing the waste oil. What they do with them after stealing? That I don't know.

That's why NEA want to find them.

That in a nutshell is why there is oil in the "sewers". Remember hor. Question may come out in this year's PSLE.
