Tuition Fee hike at four universities

Postby jasmine4 » Fri Mar 21, 2014 1:37 pm

Four public universities have raised tuition fees - by up to 7.9 per cent - for Singapore citizens enrolling in academic year 2014 (AY2014), with some institutions implementing steeper hikes for permanent residents (PRs) and international students.

Is the increased more than the inflation rate?

The increase is very steep for Singaporeans.
How can parents even think of retiring ??????
If these kids use parents CPF, they will take a long time to return and how are these kids able to get married and buy flats ?

You are thinking very long. I am worrying in five year's time when my ds turn to go university, what will the fees be like.
Need to get him to work harder and make sure he can get a full scholarship.

Son is in sec 2...still have to go poly and then do NS. Hubby is feeling the age and worry of being retrenched when he reaches 55. I don't want to think so far either because it is frightening.

How many more years to go before he reaches 55?

MAS expects inflation for 2014 to be 2.0% to 3.0%.
Is the hike a bit too much?

7.9% is the top, for law degrees at NUS. For most other general degrees, the increase is 2% to 2.6%, which is in line with inflation.

I think Uni fees still reasonable. Average around $800/mth if general degrees.
Some parents probably paid more than that per month for primary school tuition :siam:

Law degree (>$10K pa) and medical degree (>$30k pa) fees seem pretty steep though
