Desktop, Laptop or Netbook For Kid

Postby titank » Wed Dec 23, 2009 12:33 am

Hi All,

Should get a desktop PC, notebook or netbook for the kid? At what age should a child starts to have his own PC?

Next year is P1 so the school said it would be good to have a computer. Maybe wait & see how the school works in terms of IT projects given to the the students.

My DS has his own PC since 3yrs old. Initially it started with a hand-me-down but I have bought him a brand new one last year. Back then, it was mostly for www.sesamestreet.org and drawing on paint.

These days he uses it to watch our home videos & movies, surf websites like www.kidsastronomy.com, www.lego.com, youtube, facebook, etc. He also play some of my games like company of heroes, etc. His PC is next to mine, so I can observe what he does.

I doubt that much computing power is required for lower primary schoolwork; thus a netbook would probably suffice.

I think maybe a desktop cost around $1,000 should be good enough for a P1 boy to use. DS heading to RMPS next year, the school very strong in IT. :!:

Normally for project thingy, will only requires Word, Powerpoint. Other than that will be using the E-Learning Portal which you need internet access. So just get the basic will do.

I will get a desktop and install it in the living room. Open to public eye. I do not encourage laptop as it tends to have a shorter lifespan as compared to desktop.

I think.....If you alredy have a computer at home which supports msoffice pack and internet then thats good. bcoz you know the software and new elec.gadgets always come in the mkt. so we can't go for a LONG LASTING opt here. but if you have 2 or more children in the house and they all need to use the pc.... then you can go for another one.
Desk top keyboards are good for lil hands to learn speed typing.

Our desktop and laptop are all placed in the living room so that all family members can access openly.
