English Schmenglish

Postby ChiefKiasu » Sat Oct 25, 2014 1:04 pm

I've seen my fair share of cocked-up phrases and words used by my students in their essays... and it is more common than you might suspect. Given that my students are way older than Primary school kids, there are times I wondered how they managed to survive the rigours of Primary school education.

1. I hope it is just a passing phase, when we hear of people talking about the P2C Phrase.

2. As a matter of principle, we should respect our Principals.

3. I'm sure you will find this kindergarten more suitable than that kindergarden.

4. We need to practice good grammar, and avoid talking about grammer.

5. Moot does not mean that the points being made are redundant. On the contrary, it means that the points are open for arguments or discussions!

6. I loved this girl whom I met in my JC, and who has been living with me ever since.

7. I lay on the bed; but I did not laid on the pillow.

8. You may go to bed now, or you might not be able to wake up in time tomorrow.

9. We will have a lesser chance of doing well in examinations if we do fewer assignments.

10. You may bring your dogs to class, but you must remember to take them with you when you leave.
