Let's Talk about National Service

Postby Jennifer » Sun Jun 07, 2015 1:00 pm

Channel Newsasia is telecasting Commando on Tues 8pm.

National Service of yesteryears might not be the same as today's.

Appreciate sharings from parents of present NS men or recently ROD NS men.

I understand that some parents are apprehensive of their son going to serve NS.

I have two sons. I am equally anxious.

Please do not OT into NS related deaths.

NS? That's the Singaporean processor for converting boys into men. :)

It's also where we get to learn the concept of rush-to-wait. Do things more efficiently so that we get to wait longer for things to happen :)

Lol. Officers are always screaming at us to "double up" and "chop chop". We would run to reach the destination and then wait for hours for things to happen. If you have participated in a parade before, you will know what I mean.

I did my BMT in early 1995. I have one particular memory of that short period.

It was time for water parade (ie everyone drinks a full bottle of water). One 'air level' (A-level) recruit lost his key to his locker and couldn't access his water bottles.

He sat on the floor, broke down and started weeping like it was the end of the world.

Another recruit, a hokkien peng (low educational level) walked over and broke the fella's lock with a fork.

Don't think NS is going to make a man of your boy. Except in exceptional cases, they already are, or aren't.

That said, NS isn't necessarily a bad thing except it does take up a precious two years of ones life.

It would be a nightmare when your homeland is invaded and there is no one to defend it.

I am not against NS but that the govt has give 100% assurance that our DSs will return safe and sound in one piece. NS can be good training, but not when there is even the slightest possibility that our DSs can get injured or worse kaput. As long as I don't have to worry the slightest bit, NS is ok with me. I spend 18 yrs looking after my only boy as mum. I think I have the right to demand that our DSs will be 100% safe when we put them in the govt's hands for NS training.

To engage in realistic training, there is always an element of risk, no matter how small. There is no such thing as 100% no risk.

Touch wood, but even a simple thing like sending a child to school, can anyone guarantee that 100% the child will reach school safe and sound? If anyone can guarantee that (remember it's 100%, not 99.999% or less), I'm all ears.

Anyway we digressed. TS has already requested for discussion not to go off tangent.
