Postby tankee » Sun Oct 11, 2015 12:30 pm

SINGAPORE: The nose gear of a Singapore Airlines (SIA) plane collapsed on Sunday morning (Oct 11) at Changi Airport, confirmed the airline in response to queries from Channel NewsAsia.

There were no passengers or crew on board at the time, said SIA. At the time of the collapse, which happened around 8am, one engineer was on the aircraft but was not hurt, added the airline.

SIA said the Airbus A330-300 is registered as 9V-STG, and had last operated flight SQ835 which arrived in Singapore from Shanghai at 12.49am. The aircraft was next due to have operated SQ890 to Hong Kong on Sunday morning.....

The reports are that someone was doing some checks/tests. That led to testing the front wheels' retraction. You know, the wheels of the plane are retracted once they have taken off and is in mid-air. Then only when going to land, these wheels (or landing gears) will launch. When the plane is on the ground, of course these wheels must be launched to ensure that the body of the plane is not touching the ground, and for the plane to move (just like a car has wheels to move).

So what happened was the front wheel/landing gear was retracted when the plane was on the ground, and the nose promptly fell flat onto the tarmac!

Incredible.

Aren't there some system to ensure that the gear doesn't retract unless the plane is some distance above ground?

I think the maintenance guy activated the retraction

That's the point.. under no situation would a operational plane needs to have the gears retracted when it is on the ground, regardless of the type of maintenance that needs to be done.

Unless it is some specific work on the gears when the plane would be in a special facility with structures supporting the plane and maybe a docking mechanism to allow the gear to be then able to retract.
