What Are You Teaching Your Kids ? Other than studying and exam skills....

Here is a list of what I hope my kids will understand early in life:

(1) The Maths of Compound Interests : So that they will not borrow too much and end up perpectually in debt.

(2) Always Read The Small Print (also known as There Is No Free Lunch): So that they will know all these marketing ploys, discounts, free gifts, lucky draws, sales are nothing but profit-making techniques.

(3) Give Way : In life, no need to always fight to win. Do good, give way, what goes around, comes around.

2. empathy & compassion for the less fortunate
3. money sense

Oh, 1 & 2 probably should be categorised as values

1) To deal with different types of peoples in life
2) Not afraid to accept new challenges and do them well
3) Nothing is more important than family

1. Be able to stand up for yourself
2. Tact (this one needs slow nurturing, difficult to teach)
3. Diplomacy (DD1 alr picked up this skill long ago when she realised that she could behave differently when with PILs, my parents and her own parents. )

Listening skill
No matter what happen, family is always there for you

in no particular order, on top of what some of you have already stated,
(1) know what to say (not to say) at the right time
(2) know that sometimes he has to do things because it is the right thing to do even if he does not like to or want to
(3) learning to say 'No' in the face of negative peer pressure and respecting others who said 'No'

Skills then. Well I continue to train my dd's sense of aesthetic taste. Eg. To be able to coordinate colours and in the process develop good dress sense. I think this is very important because it affects how you feel ant yourself, how others view you and an ability to be aesthetically sensible affects almost everything we do from manners to design.

1) Housekeeping 101 as Mummy & maid won't be there forever.
2) Cooking 1001 as next time yr gfren/bfren won't know how to cook.
3) Why is personal hygiene, cleanliness important?
4) Why being organized is good?
5) Having Right Attitude is the key to coursing through obstacles!
6) Getting Right is Good but Getting Right after a few Wrongs is Better.
7) Opportunity Cost
8) Don't go through Life without giving a try to live your Dreams
9) Return to Society once you are able to
10) To reinforce your Knowledge, go & coach yr classmates
