New vs Used Piano

Postby compvale » Wed Aug 04, 2010 12:41 am

Hi

Need some help here.....am intending to get a U1 for my gal.

Budget aside, which option gives better quality and value:
- new U1 for $8,600 (during promo) from Yamaha
- used almost 30 years U1 from Japan for about $3,500

No knowledge about pianos at all but was told the older U1 are made with better wood so gives a better sound and are more lasting wheras the quality of the new ones are not as good. DH's view is to go for new ones as mathematically it does not make sense to pay $3,500 for something so old.

Not worth getting a piano that's almost 30 yrs old unless you're talking about high end models or a very good make like Bosendorfer or Steinway, or unless the price is really good, say around 2k region.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Been looking around & getting tired too. Probably will go for a new U1 during promo.

hi hi,

Me too! I ran to more than ten used piano shops before finally buying a new U1.

One of the salesmen I talked to told me that if a piano is over 30 years old, it's likely that the piano has been reconditioned - the parts have been changed, and they (the parts) are usually not original.
