digital Piano vs classical Piano

Re: digital Piano vs classical Piano
I think what you meant is choosing between digital & acoustic piano. I don't think there is such a term as classical piano, only classical music. Many acoustic pianos comes with a silent middle pedal that when depressed, lowers a piece of felt between the hammers and strings which in turn reduces the vol of the sound that is produced by the keys when pressed. According to some piano teachers I spoke to, it is undesirable to use this pedal especially by kids as it encourages them to use excessive force when playing the piano.Ivanlew wrote:I am considering to buy a digital piano or a classical piano. Would like to know is the feel of digital piano close or same as classical piano especially now digital piano got what hammer feeling like the classical piano. Can digital piano used to prepare for grade 1 and 2 test? How far can it go before you must get a classical piano?
If you are only aiming for grade 1 or 2, I'm sure a digital piano with weighted keys such as Yamaha Clavinova series should suffice. However even with weighted keys, the touch of an acoustic piano is still easier to control than that of a digital piano, imho. That's why in YMS, all the one-to-one students are using acoustic pianos for lessons.

It's impossible to read into the future, but if you feel that you will be able to have your child continue with music learning and not easily allow her to give up halfway, perhaps it's better to get a classical piano.
Digital piano have limited span. if you spend that 1-2K, it's gone and will not be recouped easily becos there is no resale value.
I bought a 2nd hand classical. Most 2nd hand shops have return policy - within 1 year, % will be paid if you decide to return.
Currently, DS1 (6 y/o) is learning piano becos mummy wants him to. He hates to practice and yearns to stop the classes, but I'm persisting just cos many pp have told me how they regret dropping it when young. Most pp I interview say that young kids/teens hate music classes, but they grow to eventually like it. it's all very individual.
Hi,
I agreed that can't read the future but looking at my daughter who is 8 years old don't really think she will continue till grade 8. ha ha...
Lot of my friends who learnt till grade 5 or 8 all told me don't force kids to learn piano it will kill their interest instead because they experience themselves and some don't even want to touch the piano after they completed grade 8. Have a friend who only start learning piano when she is 20 years old give out after passing grade 5, she told me very difficult. Their common comment is, piano is niece to play for liesure but they hate to take exam.
I don't wish to force and nag my daughter to learn as I have already nagging her to study every week, I am very tire.
I think piano teacher also play an important part. If you got a gentle teacher who know how to encourage children than they will continue to learn, on the other hand if the teacher is strict and forcefull than they will reluctant to learn piano. That what happen to my daugther. Initially she got a very strict teacher and she told me she wanted to stop learning and feel stress after 2 months but later the school changed another teacher, she told me she wanted to continue.
I just flick through Christopori catalog they are selling a brand new digital piano at $1450 at discount price and guarantee $700 trade-in value to upgrade to new piano within 2 years. Maybe that might be another alternative.

We have a small keyboard passed down from my sister-in-law for her to practise but she is complainting not enough key.

I don't want to buy a classical pianobecause I don't really know whehter she will continue learning. If she stop than the classical piano will become a white elephant in my living room.
Need advise as I don't know about Piano.
Thanks

Re: digital Piano vs classical Piano
hi everyone,
I have a Casio digital piano for sale. Bought for dd piano practice but she decided to give up after 1 year. She didn't practice much and so she loses her interest.
Brand: Casio AP24
Comes with bench also. It is still quite good condition.
pm me if interested.

Reselling a secondhand will be difficult. Let's say you buy a 2ndhand piano that's already 20 yrs, by the time you decide to sell, say 10 yrs down the road it would be 30 yrs old. An average Yamaha or Kawai won't last many more years after that, let alone some of the other brands. The work needed to change parts that are worn would cost more than buying the piano. So generally speaking resale value would be low when it comes to the 3rd hand.
There's a secondhand piano shop near Paya Lebar mrt, think it's called Jesslyn, quite a wide variety to suit various budget
