Thank you very much, for kind info. :-)

after reading the link you provide : now then realize that there is a difference, in time frame release of results, between sitting for piano Practical exam vs. Music Theory exam.

Practical exam results, released faster : within 4 to 6 weeks (according to website link),

Music Theory exam results, released later : 3 months

=======================================================

pardon my ignorance, for Music Theory exam, whether a child learn piano or learn violin : is the Music Theory exam paper the same, or different, for different musical instrument played ?

In Asia, ABRSM is really only very popular in Singapore and Hongkong, hence the extra resources allocated by ABRSM to these two countries.

From my understanding, Yamaha Graded Exam is the main one Japanese people use. I am not sure about this, I will ask my Japanese violin teacher next time I have lesson with her.

Hi. My dd's teacher plan for her to go for practical grade 3 next year. But I notice that she neglect the theory part as there is not enough time. I thought of go learning it from a teacher and take the examine myself and then teach her until grade 5. Reason being flexible in timing so that I can teach her during school holidays and weekends.

May I know if this is a feasible option for someone like me who don't have classical music background? I did play a few years in the Chinese Orchestra during my secondary school days but then the notes were just numbers.

I guess you really have to be very committed and have a certain flair. My only music background is school band for four years but I don't catch the theory my son is going through even for grade 3. He is preparing for g5 theory and sitting in with him during theory classes, I felt like dozing off. G5 theory includes composition and other clefs plus stuff that is beyond me.
My son took g3 practical last year with minimal focus on theory. He is going for g5 theory this Oct but his performance is unstable especially the composition portion plus tons of careless mistakes and he dreads theory. Cross my fingers, only hoping for a pass (66marks!).

To be honest I am not aware of anyone who has done what you suggested. If say 10 years ago I would say it was very hard to do, but now with the abundance of useful music theory apps, I would say it is doable. Grade 5 Theory is basically just like a maths test. You want to be a guinea pig for me to try this out if its possible to prepare grade 5 theory without classical instrument background? :evil:

I think it's possible to learn theory without classical music background. Most kids learn theory without much practical knowledge of the instrument anyway.... why won't an adult be able to learn it in accelerated time? All you need is good memory, logical thinking skills, and probably an optional keyboard for you to visualize those notes.

Sound tedious to me. Just send your dc to intensive theory class during school holiday. No need to learn then teach.

Refer to my earlier post. My dd took 17 hours of intensive theory lesson. Enough to progress from zero theory background to grade 5.
