distance between the upright piano and the wall

Postby MusicAmor » Thu May 17, 2012 9:18 pm

Hello,

May I know whether such a factor has any effect on its sound? Thinking whether to leave a 3-4" gap between the piano and the wall.

Hi Music Amor,

My upright is 5 cm away from the wall. The piano movers said this was the right distance, and the piano tuner didn't have a problem with this distance.

My piano tuner advised that for European pianos, minimum 6 inches for optimal sound.

Mine is about 10cm.

Moving the piano too close to the wall muffles the bass (lower registers of the piano), but when it's too far, the bass might drown out the high notes. Experiment!
