I have 6 kids and a lot of them use beginner sewing kits, which work just fine.

My girl was just watching me sew some of the old clothes we have. Since then, she has shown interest in sewing clothes. A good place to start is to let them sit with you when you are sewing and answer their questions, even letting them give it a try. Now, she's learning a lot and enjoys it as much as I do.

A cute DIY project to start with your kids would be sewing buttons. It is just simple and easy and it's really fun! Here's a link for some tutorials.
