How to teach DD to read?

Postby kikiaya » Fri Dec 30, 2011 3:12 pm

Hello

My girl is going to P1 and she's struggling to read..She has excellent memory though, she can speak English, Malay and Mandarin..but give her a book and all goes blank..

Not sure if the 2 major head injuries she sustained when she was younger had anything to do with it (first incident at 2yo+, fell and hit her head backwards, hole at the back of her head too big and deep, doctors had to pour medical glue to close it..second incident at 3yo+, fell and hit her forehead, gaping wound, had to have 6 stitches)..I'm really struggling how to teach her..Didn't have a problem with her older brother who started reading on his own at 3yo..

Any ideas?

Maybe you can try reading it with her? Show her pictures? Your DD sounds intelligent. Intelligent kids always have prob sitting still cos they want to move ard.

dyslexic?
if not, you can either teach her phonics to decipher the words, or since she has good memory, introduce sightwords to her since sightwords make up majority of any given reading passage.
