Help! My 11 yo Daughter Back in Diapers..

Post by HiDaddy » Fri Jun 22, 2012 1:28 pm

Hi all,

I am the father of a P5 girl. She is a happy child and maintains a close relationship with me and my wife.

However, at the start of this year, she started having bedwetting problems. At first, she wet the bed around once a week. However, it gradually became worse and eventually she wet the bed every day.

She is quite troubled and embarrassed because of this. I did some research and put it down to the stress in school. She is a deep sleeper and often can not wake up to go to the bathroom. At first, we tried to limit what she drinks before her bedtime at 10 but it didn't work. Then, we brought her to pediatrician for check-up and doctor say that its due to stress and will stop after a while. This was in early Feb. We asked her if she was having any trouble in school (bullies etc) but she say no. We consulted her teacher and teacher also say that DD is very happy in school. However, her condition seem to be worsening even further. During the June holidays she often seem to be rushing to the toilet very urgently. Luckily, she did not have any day 'accidents' yet.

Wife and I have been giving her moral support to try to lift her spirits. However, the wetting continued. It has become quite taxing for the 3 of us but we always emphasize that it is not her fault. Some time back my wife decided to put her back in pull-ups for night time so that we do not have to change the sheets every day. DD was shocked at first but relented after some convincing. However, the Goodnites (pull-up for bedwetting children) absorbtion was extremely poor and leaked very often, so we bought her small size adult diaper instead. At first, DD put the diapers on herself, but did not know how to put it on properly and it ends up opening when she sleeps, causing it to leak, so now my wife insists that she puts it on for her. At times, when she works late or is overseas, I will put the diaper on for her. To be honest, I was worried about DD's feelings when I diaper her, but surprisingly she is okay with it.

Wife and I are very worried that we might end up having to put her in diapers during the day too because her wetting condition seems to be worsening. It is an extremely drastic measure, especially school is starting soon. At least daughter does not have too much emotional distress because of this.

Any parent with similar experience out there? Have any advice for us? Thanks!

Cheers, HiDaddy

Edit..

Her wetting turned out to be a psychological issue. Nothing big, just a phase that will pass with time.

Thanks

Hi HiDaddy,

your kid could have an overactive bladder or maybe suffering from urinary tract infection. Maybe you want to check out some of the methods in this link below or seek a second opinion from another PD?:

Instead of asking her to wear diapers, you may also consider putting a rubber sheet on top of her bed/mattress?

Cheers!

HiDaddy, so sorry to hear that..... Although I don't have similar experience or hear of any similar experience like what you have described, I do think you need to seek second opinion. Go see another doc/specialist as your case might be more than stress or drink too much water at night.

PS: my DS wet his bed occasionally when he was in P2. We restricted him from drinking water after 8pm & the problem has been solved & so far no reoccurrence.

Hi
Is she sleeping with the fan blowing constantly at the lower part of her body? If so, u got to adjust the fan. If not, What I can suggest is also to limit the amount of water she drinks at night. Ask her to go to the toilet before she sleeps and wake her up to pee at say 3am nightly? Know it's going to be tedious but it's better than wetting the bed every night.

Hi Ponyo! I forgot to put this in the original post, but the wife initially experimented with the sheets. However, it didn't work too well as DD tends to toss and turn on the bed before she falls asleep, so the sheets will move out of place and the bed still ends up wet. Thanks for your help!

Cheers,
HiDaddy

Have you brought your DD back to the doctors again?

In the meantime, no choice but to try to get her to wake up to pee.

To manage the hassle of the mattress getting wet when I was toilet training my kids, I placed a rubber mat on the mattress before putting on the bedsheets. Then I got lazy having to strip the bedsheets, I put another rubber mat on top of the bedsheets, bought a large beach towel that allow me to tuck the sides under the mattress and place that on top of the 2nd rubber mattress. That keeps the mat relatively in place. So essentially, kiddos are lying on the towel, if they wet themselves, the towel absorbs the urine, the rubber mat keeps the bedsheets dry. And there is the additional rubber mat that will keep the mattress dry and clean. So all I need to do is to replace the towel and clean the 1st rubber mat.

Yup, it could be a physical issue, not just a stress related one. Best to consult a doc, who can then refer to a specialist if necessary.

And ya, you can buy those mattress waterproof protectors to prevent your mattress from being wet. I bought 2 of these while toilet training my boys. These are like bedsheets but waterproof.
