How to use 'none'?

Which is correct ?

1) None of the girls was present at the school concert last night?
2) None of the girls were present at the school concert last night?

Should be 'was' or 'were'?

Help pls. :? :?:

"None" can be thought of as " not one". Since one is singular, it should be 'was'.

The correct answer is

None of the girls was present at the school concert last night?
