Please recommend seaprate Cloze, Vocab and Comprehension

Postby optimistforum » Tue Feb 01, 2011 3:05 pm

Hi

Can anyone please recommend separate books in Challenging:Cloze, Vocab and Comprehension - for P1 to P4.

I want books that are prescriptive, and with NO multi-choice questions.

When I check on POPULAR or specific sites I cannot see sample pages - and so I cannot make an informed decision.

Can some respond quickly, please?

Vocab and Cloze are vitally important; a vocab book which gives word lists and means before setting questions, and a cloze book (that also asks questions wheer no word options are given, and DC have to think up the word themselves)?

For comprehension, I would prefer a book which is demanding with O/E and MCQ questions - maybe Challenging Comprehension or Excel in Comprehension?

for compre u can try Comprehension Skills. Offhand i cant rem the publisher but there is only 1 bk wif this title.
it has the compre skills in the bk

for vocab u can try topical vocab which is colored and has a list. i think its Learners Publishers.
actually i m looking for a vocab bk that lists words similiar in spelling eg testify, justify, qualify, etc

hvnt tried Cloze.

If you are looking vocabs for writing, my students are using Casco's Zoom in Vocabs and Zoom in Phrasal Verbs. There are good books with model compositions, highlighting the vocabs and verbs with explanations. In each exercise, there would be a practice to make sure that students know the actual meaning of these words and would not use it wrongly.

You can also try preston's book. Look them up in the popular. You can flip through each book (like what I always do) to make sure the book suits your kid =D

Hi 24-hrmun and Jospehine Ng

I hope you are both well.

Please let me know your thoughts on the following EPH Titles as enrichment books?

1. Complete Practice in Comprehension, Vocab and Grammar

2. Challenging English 4-in-1

Also what are your thoughts on the Marshall Cavendish English Practice Books.

Regards

hi

i cant rem the titles u mentioned nor tried them.
but personally i dont like all-in-1 bks tho some parents may think its value for $.
i dont like becos i dont think they specialise in any segment, and the thickness of the bk overwhelms me, n prob my child

for compre, i recommend:
1) comprehension skills, by dorcas ang, success publication..
teaches skills and exam format

2) someone recommend The Ultimate Guide to mastering compre.
the contents are gd, teaches what is inferential questions etc but i dont like the style of presentation. looks wordy

3) if u can teach urslf, dont need the tips, go for conquer compre - purely exam format type of compre. i just discovered the p3 bk - the first passage was actually my girl's sch compre when she was p2!

for vocab:
creative vocab - new bk, from p4 onwards only
topical vocab by learners - colored, got notes, gd
conquer vocab

for grammar:
topical grammar - colored. no notes but i like the format

basically i cant tahan bks that are wordy or looks wordy

Hello All,
I am also looking for Comprehension books for my P3 gal - she is quite weak in this area so am thinking to get some books to "self-teach" her

Went to Popular Bookstore and the sales staff recommends the following:
http://www.popular.com.sg/jsp/product/p ... d001=73166

Primary 3 Get Ahead The Ultimate Guide To Mastering Comprehension
Author : Shaheed Salim
Publisher : PanPac Education Pte Ltd
Level : Primary 3
Item Code : 9789812719676
Usual Price : S$6.65
NOW : S$5.99

Anyone else has other recommendations? Thanks a lot in advance :thankyou:

i browse this book and understand there are 7 skills (if i am not wrong), do you use these 7 skills to do 1 comprehension? Or you just choose 1 skill which your child is comfortable?
