Heyya...

Try this...
Before attempting to read the comprehension passage,
read through the questions first - like once through...
Twice even better. Then read the passage. Why this
works? ( For me and my kiddie, at least... :wink: )

The once through with the questions has provided the
child with an idea... a sneak preview to what the story
or the passage is about.

Hence, when reading the passage the answers come
almost automatic, cos they already know it was being
asked in the questions (that they read earlier...).

Another is to scoop out for the main word - read from
the question itself and the answer should be around
there. Better to have a clue than a blank - i dunno...
cannot find.

Sometimes the question is tricky cause the word has
been changed to another with similar meaning - sieve
that out from the passage as well. For example :

The passage goes...

>...after spending all the money her mum gave her on
the stationery from the bookshop, she was not left with
any balance of coins to make that one important phone call.

The question then reads...

>What happened to the remaining coins? Why couldn't she make the call?

> Or - Was there any amount left from the pocket money to make the
call? Why?

In this example, the main word was intentionally replaced to test the
child's vocabulary skills. :wink: Child must know that these words
all provide similar meanings.

>ie. balance=remainder= whatever amount that is left....
..... to know that (that word) it is the main word from the question given.

Child must also watch for the very direct clues - why, what, where, how,
whose, who, etc indications of what of answer the question needs...

With our home practise, we also follow a general rule to underline the
answer and number them accordingly (to the corresponding question),
to save the trouble of looking/scouring for the answer again by having
to read through the passage AGAIN.. That, i find the children don't like
to do. They do not fancy reading the passage over and over again...
especially when they already know they couldn't find in the first place.

So, they totally dislike this statement...
"Read through the passage again and understand...
The answer is in there.. Try again.."

Left to that on their own to solve for so much so..
more than what they can tahan (to hear), they will
switch off and lose interest.

I'm not sure if this technique will help but just sharing
what i work with my girls and my students. :wink:

Personally I think this is a very good method! I've used this myself seemingly forever, since upper primary school days. It even works for me in uni - every hypothetical question I've encountered in exams can be attacked this way. It really helps to zoom in and sieve out the important points in the passage, especially if it's a long-winded one... Thumbs up!

This is a very systematic approach indeed. I printed out the steps and intend to apply it on dd1.

Buds - thanks for sharing. My dd is so weak in English especially comprehension and cloze passage. Any sharing for cloze passage? I tell her to read the story through once before attempting to fill in the blanks. Then read the 2nd time and try to fill up the blanks but she must think of 2 or 3 other possible words. She has to find clues in the passage too and then choose the most appropriate word from the possibilities - still unable to score. She does better in "fiction" passage than factual passage though. What is acceptable marks for P6 (out of 15 marks)?

Heyya westmom, apologize for the rather late reply... To answer your
questions... (1) Cloze Passages come in many kinds, just like you
mentioned. It could ask for pronouns, vocabulary words, adjectives and
so on... I have seen your other postings on HELP for aiding with English
using the fastest way possible especially with the SA1's coming in full force
very very soon. The fastest way for me, is learning through play. So I put
up a sample of doing a word game with your daughter. In her case, from
my understanding... asking her to read, without her understanding is a
futile attempt to get fast improvements at this point. So what we can do is
to "provide the words" for her. This way your daughter may not really feel
the pressure you are putting on her to show results. As SA1 is seriously
near, it is also unfair to request she "buck up on time or else" kinda thing..
There are many ways of WORD PLAY to cover the English Language in fun
ways and activities. Apart from this sample, i will try to put up more on
such similar word games soon.. will try my best. :wink:

PLAY RULES : Cut out all the pronoun cards and play fill in the blanks!

(2) Acceptable marks....... gee... this i dunno. Full marks? Hahahahaa!
Naah, just pulling your leg. I suppose acceptable for your daughter's
case... is a range which is enough to not pull down her marks for the
entire paper. Hopefully she can score better for those multiple choice
questions and also comprehension.

(3) The ability to tackle "fiction-type" cloze passages just goes to show
that the readings (storybooks & other literature) she has been doing, is
put to good use. As fiction passages require the child to pick out an
appropriate word from her own vocabulary bank (from her readings) to
fill up the spaces and complete the story line of the passage.

I'll need some time to put up the rest of the activities. Pls bear with me.
Hope to try and help you as much as i can..... and hope it works for your
daughter.

Wah..Buds...you are fantastically resouceful. Where you get these ideas from? I will try to see whether these work for my dd. She is already in P6 this year with loads of hw everyday with everything else needed to be somehow squeezed into her packed schedule. Thanks a lot!

I am the old night bird here that has an extreme fetish for resources -
of ANY kind! So, my place is stocked with books - adult, children's books,
magazines, resource books, craft books, etc... what i humbly call my own
resource library. Hubs nags at me all the time buying and buying but he
says i ain't using anymore (since i'm SAHM)... so i reply, not working now
does not mean not working next time.. so collect first no harm right?:wink:

The ones i shared with you have been used for my enrichment classes
(creative writing) for pre-primary and lower primary lessons but of a
different topic, but similar game plan. My lessons are usually targeted
at fun learning for children - any age.. The older the child the more
challenging the work is for me. But i like the challenge. Children are bored
with worksheets after worksheets piled on them, so for my enrichment
lessons, i try to have hands on activities each week. After all, they are
with me to be enriched. So i enrich them with play. Learning through
play... which will forever be my motto. Let the children unwind but yet
learn in a non-stressful environment. :wink: It is possible. There are
many opportunities for word play in the English Language, so learning
English will be interesting and yes, FUN...

So, i did up one similar resource game plan for you earlier today, to
explain the method to assist in the asap help you requested for..
Alternatively is to also let her indulge in crossword puzzles type of
books. My girl likes to do them and will bring along for our outings,
to keep herself occupied.

My style is to cover the basics... the foundation of the parts of speech for
the pre-primary and lower primary children cause this is the core for
proper sentence structure/writing activities, prior to the actual writing
and the introduction of grammar rules. The children will have more/better
concrete understanding of the parts to help them with the Primary English
load..

No worries whether you will eventually have time to work the stuff out
with your daughter, it's understandable that she has major workload
right now. I'm just here to provide a different perspective to learning
the language and make it seem less stressful for you and all. Just here
to share experience!

Buds...Tell your hubby that at least you are spending money on useful stuff that has future return on investment ! Your kids will certainly benefit from the knowledge mummy has! Some women I know spends a lot on beauty stuff but stinge on their kids education stuff...i cannot understand this. OK..thanks yawn...goodnight...
