Mandarin Enrichment Classes for kids w/out chinese parents

Postby snaw » Mon Oct 01, 2012 12:31 pm

Hi Everyone,

I have a 6 & 4 year old girls, both going into the local Montessori kindergardens, with the oldest starting primary school next year. Speaking to their teachers and they seem to think they will need some additional help with mandarin, esp given we don't speak it at home (From UK/Aus).

Can anyone recommend a class, maybe one more geared up to teach in a fun way than in a rigid classroom format, on the east coast? Or would it be better to get a tutor to come to us?

Many thanks in advance, pls let me know if there's additional info needed to help get some good advice?

Cheers.

There are many enrichment classes conducted by various language centres. 1-to-1 tutoring here usually focuses on school syllabus. You would be able to read comments about them in other sections in this forum.

Children usually pick up the language very naturally while playing with other children. This is also a cheaper way and it is less stressful. So, interacting with other Chinese children who speak Mandarin (understand that nowadays many rather speak English).

Remembering the characters can be a burden for many esp if they don't have a natural learning environment. If you would like them to brush up in this area, here is a good resource on learning the characters systematically:
