### Enriching learning of math using games and activities

This is a thread committed to sharing games and activities to make learning math more fun and meaningful to our young kids.

There will be a daily post from Monday to Friday each week. It is hoped that if you like this approach, you may share your own experiences with your children here or share this thread with other parents.

As a preview, the games and activities for this week are listed below.

Monday - One Hundred Hungry Ants

This is a very adorable children's book that brings the concept of factors to life. 100 ants are looking for food. They march in one row of 100, two rows of 50, 4 rows of 25, 5 rows of 20 and 10 rows of 10. Did they manage to find what they were looking for? Read on to find out.

Suitable for Primary 3 and 4

Suggested activity
Read the book aloud together. Get 100 counters to reenact the story. Have fun!

Tuesday - Hungry Fish

This is an educational app that teaches part-whole concept in numbers. The fish is hungry, it needs food! However, it is very fussy. You need to feed it with the right food. If it is looking for '5' food, you can combine '2' and '3' to make the '5' food. It will not eat food with other numbers.

Blink is a simple 2-player card game of card matching according to their common characteristics such as colours, shapes and quantities. It is a short and quick game which is fun for young children.

Thursday - Tony's Pizza Fraction Shop

In this Pizza Shop, you have fill customers' orders by making pizzas using different ingredients. For example, a super large pizza has 16 slices and you have to put cheese on half, pepperoni on a quarter and mushrooms on a quarter of the pizza. How many slices for each ingredient?

Suitable for Primary 3 and 4

Friday - Jenga

Jenga is a dexterity game which requires children to stack up blocks. The game ends when the tower topples. As the blocks are arranged in groups of 3, this game can be extended into an exercise on multiplying and dividing by 3.

Suitable for all levels

Monday - How Much is a Million?

What happens when one million children stand on one another's shoulders? How big is a bowl that contains one million goldfish? How many pages in a book would contain one million stars? Answers are found in the book that explains big numbers like million, billion and trillion in interesting ways.

Suitable for Primary 5 and 6
Concept - Whole Numbers
Suggested activity
Come up with more examples of a million of something and try to figure out what it means.

Tuesday - Hey! That's my fish!

As a penguin, you have to fight it out with other penguins by capturing as many fish as you can. Make strategic moves by capturing the greatest territory possible.
