### Re: The difference...

Ans: 593

I'm assuming it's a Maths problem and not an English question.

Right phrasing for Maths should be "diffference of x and y" (your first post) and the answer would then be | x-y | (| | implying that it would an absolute number, not a negative number).

"Difference between x and y" would then be a linguistics question and the answer could be odd and even, or even one start with 7 and the other with 5, etc.

Probably a bit too much for P2 to understand / note the difference (no pun intended).

### Re: The difference...

U r quick to spot that ..
The child is more inclined to English, stories and into reading...
It was natural this child used right brain rather than left brain to answer the question.
The point is it was marked wrong and teacher did not even explain to the child, it is not wrong, just not the answer for maths.

### Re: The difference...

Not trying to prove anything, and I am sure this child is not trying to be funny or anything... just sharing... (child went home puzzled and asked mummy, "Why is this wrong?"

First, the question could have been set more full-proofed as pointed out by "floppy".

Second, this child only learns Maths through school textbooks and classes and if any credit, all goes to teachers and school, because, completely no tuition or assessment books were provided, not that the child needs any of those. None of Maths textbook/activity book teaches "difference" translate to "subtraction" in Maths (I could be wrong but i just briefly browsed through). It is just a convention that was taken for granted and those kids with tons of "private" worksheets would have been easily "moulded".

Last but not least, the purpose of testing the ability in understanding Maths i.e. basic operation of subtraction, has nothing to do with whether a child can can answer this question or not.

Hence, for parents with young kids. Please do check their marked papers and do more understanding of how they think and embrace their uniqueness and ability to think and express outside the "moulded" environment. Don't jump too fast into just the right answers.

Qn: The difference between 796 and 203 is _________.
A P2 child answered: One is even and the other is odd.

Most surveyed through word of mouth or other media, said it is not wrong to answer this way too.
