Mummy moomoomouth: Hello

Postby moomoomouth » Wed May 25, 2011 10:33 am

Hello everyone,

I am a newbie in Kiasu Parent and have only one kid.

My girl MK is turning 5 this year and she has extremely short attention span and poor memory. She gets distracted easily which I think it's one of the factors leading to poor memory. She don't know how to read at all at this stage. I've sent her for phonic classes at premium schools and community centres but no results. Despite reading to her everyday, she is still not able to read simple sentences, not even 3 words!

Can someone suggest how to improve her memory and phonics?

Thank you.

Welcome moomoomouth,

my son could not read, or should I say could only recognize some alphabets, until we sent him to a Montessori school at 4.5 yr old. As the school gave us the week's activities on the last day of each week, we went through all the activities of the week on Sunday evenings to reinforce what was taught in school, especially phonics. This helped, and he was able to read simple words, or short books by the time he was 5.

Sometimes, it could be the child has hearing problem, or vision problem. My niece had learning problem. It turned out she could not see well. Btw, it was the observant mum who realized it, not the professional help they engaged.

If you are unable to observe her behaviors, perhaps like what LKVM suggested, the right professional help could come in handy.
