But what a good lesson! I try not to give in to last-minute requests unless it's really crucial. Let them learn to inform us in advance! My family is quite well-trained now.

Some kids are simply more challenging than others. If all kids respond the same way to the same method, I wonder what kind of world it will be. A bit scary actually.

Lucky are those who have easily mouldable kids.

Or unlucky kids who have very hard-hearted parents! (that's what my kids would say!)

I wouldn't say you lost. Since the machine had finished running and the dryer was available, he was just lucky. You can remind him that on another day if the machine was still running or there wasn't time to dry the t-shirt, he would have to do without. Or if you hadn't started the wash, he would have to wear it unwashed!
