It is so nice to hear the real story of improvements on the actual exam! Thanks phtthp & zealmom.
I think there are several things to bear in mind - some schools do set their internal standards higher than the public exams, either to "frighten" the kids into working harder, or to stretch the kids more. Some teachers are also fussier in how they mark than the public examiners, expecting "perfect/model" answers in order to avoid any mark slippage, when examiners might well accept a wider range of answers as equally acceptable.

But another thing to remember is that school is for learning, which is process. A student would be foolish to think that the score the get in Sec 3 will necessarily indicate the grade they will get 1-2 years later. Or when little kids are expected to know the P1 work before the start P1! You should assume that there will be an improvement over the years.

And there's also the fact that teenagers are able to put in some extra push in preparation for a major exam. That could well push the grades up a notch too.

O level is still quite "dead" i think most time still got chance to do well, provided the kid must study for the exam lar.
u tried to recall your O level days, or showed her your results to encourage her how u get into JC then
my sch mid yr n prelims were bad too in Sec 4, but O level was much much better.

When i wanted to scold my kid, dh will ask me to reflect on our O and A level results too ...

btw, just continue to all the subjects, no need to physically drop the subject.
yah, no one will really look at O level cert , its the criteria for poly and jc admission
next , nobody will look at A level cert too, its the criteria for uni or poly admission again

zac mum shared earlier on diploma grad's knowledge in subject content, my sil who worked in top bank commented that she was "disappointed" with her poly interns she met as their knowledge of content is superficial, she encouraged these youngsters to go back to further degree to learn more. And yes, she is another person who is impressed with a few of the smu biz interns.
I m feeling more 'confident' now..yalor maybe first few jobs bring certs for HR to photocopy only yeah..

She seems to be more excited now with her lessons. Let's hope it continues.

Jmo, even if struggling in maths, math is still more manageable than ki ...

I agree with doodbug, mostly, & slmkhoo. Plus I feel that KI's way of conducting lessons seems to be substantially self-directed, so if the (ki) student population is small, it is difficult to benefit from the (ki) curriculum, cos you don't have sufficient peers to bounce ideas around. But if the student thinks that he would enjoy the curriculum, go for it, it's doable (: , not scary. In fact, I'd greatly enjoy it myself I believe, & I'd recommend my youngest to offer it too if there's a chance, but at this moment of course her maturity level & command of english do not give me confidence haha. Just a personal reflection
Thank you. The kids I know that have taken it (KI) are, in their own words, absolutely terrible at Math. Whether KI was easier than Math, I don't know and I will trust what is provided here. In the end, I believe they selected something they wanted to do, or at least avoided something they know they didn't want to do (Math). Or perhaps worst case they were too stuck on taking 4H2 (vs. H1 Math).

Anyways, we can all move on. I'm not pounding anything and have no idea whether either of my kids will take it (may not even be capable). Just watching for now. Nonetheless, I haven't concluded that spending time on GP + Random Contrasting is any easier or more useful than dumping the effort into KI (for the Science kids).

My kid offered both ki & h2 ma (science) - the impractical sort who would only study for interest 🤷

Every child is different, with different makeup of strengths, likes and dislikes. I guess we all speak with some bias towards our own experience - my older daughter was bad at Maths, worse at sciences, and would have completely tanked in KI (even if she were given the chance, which she wasn't). So that was my pecking order!

Really, you can see educational certs there? Is it only for the young people or for older people like us?
