Very soon the AI bot will “learn” to throw in some grammatical errors and colloquial phrases. Then no one would be able to tell us apart!

Those are just the mechanics of language, and I suppose it can learn how to do it - and perhaps customise the errors in the style of speakers of a specific language - Singlish, Chinese, French, etc. Anyway, as I've been browsing, here are a couple more interesting articles. Basically, other characteristics of humans are things like emotional intelligence, creativity, personal experiences, ethical views, etc. Not impossible to fake, but harder.

Actually, my main grouse with ChatGPT is that it doesn't cite sources, and who knows whether the material it has is accurate or true?
Also, as an editor, maybe it will now be a negative to aim for "error-free"! Not that any book is every error-free though - no matter how well I check, there almost always seems to be something I didn't notice.

ChatGPT is an English language AI based on Natural Language Models.

It does not work with other languages natively. There are language translate AIs but that is another layer. Microsoft "demo"-ed a real-time English-to-Japanese Text-to-Speech keynote using virtual-reality hologram 4 years ago. Just image what can be achieved when technologies are combined.

A general knowledge or your "internet knowledge" AI is a few more steps than a pure language one. Source quality is a concern. Recently, Google tried to rush "Bard", which seeks to combine the breadth of the world's knowledge with the power of large language models. It didn't go very well.



By the way, I am not of the opinion that any primary/secondary kid should use tools like ChatGPT to generate writing for them. There are basics they should learn first.

I agree with this. Just like I believe kids should learn to write with pencil and paper before they type, or learn to walk before they dance!

But I would be interested to see how it works (will try it out one day when I have time) for writing articles, web posts etc. My impression is that the output can be rather bland, but maybe can be used as a starting point. My only concern is whether I can ask it to cite its sources so I can discern its reliability.

Content wise, the points coverage is pretty impressive. In terms of generating key points to include in discussion (and then elaborating on the details yourself), it may be quite useful.

If I were to nitpick, there's room for improvement expression (vocab) wise - e.g. in terms of use of rhetoric approaches, idioms, proverbs etc.
