L1R5, can exclude MT calculation in the aggregate . I do know MT is core , must pass A1 to D7. In situation if other subjects score better MT/HMT?

Must pass but not necessary to be computed in L1R5:

Relevant Subject 1 – Humanities / Higher Art / Higher Music / Malay (Special Programme) / Chinese (Special Programme) / Bahasa Indonesi - See more at: https://www.moe.gov.sg/admissions/direct-admissions/dsa-jc/eligibility#sthash.O4P6nUBl.dpuf

Then I wonder if din include MT as the L1R5 calculation , is the student able to get 2 points discount fr taking HMT , Jc entry.

L1R5 and HMT discount are 2 independent issues.

You can still get 2 points deduction from HMT when applying to JC even if you don't include MT in your L1R5 calculation.

This is what my DS did.

L1 - Language (English / Higher MT)
R1 - Combined Humanities (Elect Geog/Hist/Lit + Social Studies)
R2 - 1 math (Elementary / Add Math / POA)
R3 - 1 science (Chem / Bio / Physics)
R4 & R5 - any two relevant subjects (e.g: other sciences / MT / 3rd language...)

If L1 is English and not HMT, but students take HMT, the total L1R5 can deduct 2 points if students pass HMT. :rahrah:

The following is extracted from the JAE 2016 booklet :
https://www.moe.gov.sg/docs/default-source/document/education/admissions/jae/files/jae-info.pdf

Relevant Subject 1 - Humanities/ Higher Art/ Higher Music/ Malay (Special Programme)/ Chinese (Special Programme)/ Bahasa Indonesia
Relevant Subject 2 - Mathematics/ Science
Relevant Subject 3 - Humanities/ Higher Art/ Higher Music/ Mathematics/ Science/ Malay (Special Programme)/ Chinese (Special Programme)/ Bahasa Indonesia
Relevant Subject 4 - Any GCE 'O' Level subjects (except Religious Knowledge and CCA)
Relevant Subject 5 - Any GCE 'O' Level subjects (except Religious Knowledge and CCA)

As for the bonus point given for HMT, the current criteria is a pass in both EL and HMT regardless of the language used for the L1 calculation. However, if HMT grade is used as L1, then the MT grade cannot be used as one of the R5.

For your L1R5, if you take HMT, you can include it in your computation and still get the 2 bonus points.

In my DS' case, his HMT is A2 and English B3

So, he used his HMT as his L1 instead of English.

Can I ask what happens with Mother Tongue exemption with English as the only Language (L1).

Does this mean that these children will not get the potential -2 bonus for HMT and thus never get the potential maximum of -4 points in the L1R5, leaving them at a greater disadvantage in applying for Junior College?

It occurs to me that for RI's cut off requirement of 3 to be met everyone must get at least a point deduction from HMT.

EDIT: I am wondering if the Chinese Special Program(CSP) a mechanism to make up for the lack of MT and HMT. According to the MOE FAQ there is also a 2 point deduction offered if a pass mark at CSP O level is achieved.

I will be most grateful for any advice for a total novice!
